The Rolling Stones stream unreleased Chi-Lites cover from Tattoo You reissue

photo: Hemlut Newton

The Rolling Stones are streaming a previously-unreleased cover of the Chi-Lites’ 1970 track, “Troubles a’ Comin”, ahead of its inclusion in a series of expanded reissues of their 1981 album, “Tattoo You.”

Recorded in Paris, France in 1979, the songis one of nine unreleased tunes from the era for the album’s 40th anniversary series; due October 22, the 1981 record has been remastered as a standalone set, with most packages featuring unreleased recordings and a 1982 concert from London’s Wembley Stadium.

“It’s a funny album,” Mick Jagger recently revealed to Rolling Stone about “Tattoo You”. “It’s not an album where you can say we went into X studio, we spent six months and this is the album. It’s just tracks that got recorded any time from 1972 to 1981. It wasn’t really an album. It was all over the place. It doesn’t have a kind of center.”

“Tattoo You” 40th Anniversary Editions will be available in a multiple formats, including CD, LP and digital, Deluxe 2CD and 2LP versions, and 4CD and 5LP Super Deluxe Boxset.

Upon its original release, the project was the group’s last album to top the US Billboard 200 while reaching the Top 5 in more than a dozen countries.

The Rolling Stones dedicated their No Filter US Tour to Charlie Watts during an emotional opening night in St. Louis, MO on September 26.

AC/DC spotlight band history in Through The Mists Of Time video

AC/DC are debuting a video for the “Power Up” track, “Through The Mists Of Time.”

The clip is a rock and roll museum tour through an exhibition of the band’s legendary history, featuring spotlights on the lineup of Angus Young, Brian Johnson, Cliff Williams, Phil Rudd, and Stevie Young, and late members Malcolm Young and Bon Scott.

Based on a concept by Angus, Director Najeeb Tarazi and creative director Josh Cheuse used footage shot by Clemens Habicht of each of the 5 band members in 5 separate shoots around the world; they then enlisted Mathematic, a Paris based visual effects studio, to combine all the elements so the current members could be seen taking the stage together.

Introduced with the lead single, “Shot In The Dark”, “Power Up”debuted at No. 1 in the US and UK, among others – while also enjoying a four-week run atop the Australian charts.

Scorpions announce new Rock Believer album and European tour

The Scorpions have announced plans to release a new album, “Rock Believer”, and dates for a 2022 European tour in support of the project.

The band spent much of the pandemic together in their hometown in Hannover, Germany working on their 19th studio set which will arrive on February 11, and marks the first appearance of ex-Motorhead drummer Mikkey Dee on record with the group since his addition in 2016.

“The album was written and recorded in the style of the classic Scorpions DNA with core Schenker/Meine compositions,” says Klaus Meine. “We really went back to the essence of what defined us in the first place. We recorded the album as a band, live, in one room, like we did back in the Eighties. We can’t wait to get started and finally play for our fans again.”

Scorpions will preview the album with the release of the lead single, “Peacemaker”, late next month.

The band will return to live action in March when they host a rescheduled Las Vegas residency at the Zappos Theater at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, and have now announced dates for a European tour in support of “Rock Believer.”

In sync with the 50th anniversary of their debut album, “Lonesome Crow”, the series will open in Lisbon, Portugal on May 10, hitting nine countries – including a six-show run in their native Germany with special guests Mammoth WVH.

“The prospect of rocking with my bandmates in front of hundreds of thousands of fans next year and presenting them our new album is already giving me goosebumps,” says guitarist Rudolf Schenker. “This album and the upcoming world tour will also be something very special in our career.”

Scorpions Rock Zone fan community members have exclusive first access to tickets and VIP packages beginning Thursday, September 30 at 10:00am CET, with general public tickets going on sale Friday, October 1st at 10:00am CET.

Neil Young shares rarity from 1970 Carnegie Hall package

Neil Young is sharing audio of “Sea The Sky About To Rain” from a 1970 Carnegie Hall show that will launch his Official Bootleg Series on October 1.

It’s one of a few songs that are featured in Young’s debut performance at the iconic New York venue that were captured before they were recorded in studio and released; in this case, the tune eventually appeared on his 1974 album, “On The Beach.”

Mixed from the original analog multitrack tapes by the rocker and Niko Bolas, “The Neil Young Official Bootleg Series -- Carnegie Hall 1970” delivers a solo acoustic show that took place three months after he issued his third album, “After The Gold Rush.”

“Listening to existing bootlegs, it seems that all the bootleggers got the second Carnegie Hall show,” shared Young on the Neil Young Archives last year when announcing the project. “There was one at 8:00 pm and one at midnight [about 27 hours later]. No one got that first one — the first time I walked onstage at Carnegie Hall, blowing my own 25-year-old mind.

“We have both show masters. That earliest show, the one no one made a bootleg of (that we can find), is the best one by a lot. Listening to it now, I hear things in my voice I’ve never heard before, singing those songs before they were recorded. After they are recorded, I seem to follow the recorded arrangement, but these takes are before those recordings.”

“OBS 1: Carnegie Hall 1970” will be available in multiple formats, including double vinyl, double CD and High Res Digital Audio.

Judas Priest guitarist recovering from emergency heart surgery

Judas Priest guitarist Richie Faulkner is reportedly “stable and resting” after undergoing “major emergency heart surgery" that led to the immediate shut down of the band’s North American tour this week.

Faulkner’s girlfriend, Mariah Lynch, shared an update on the rocker’s status via Instagram on Tuesday, writing: “Thank you to everyone for all your messages. I will try to get back to you as soon as I can. Richie underwent major emergency heart surgery. He is stable & resting.

"If you know him, you know how tough & strong he is. So tough that he finished the show & kept the hair flips coming. There's no one like him. We'd be lost without him. #HotDad".

Lynch is the daughter of Dokken/Lynch Mob guitarist George Lynch; the couple became parents to their first child last summer.

The day after Judas Priest completed their September 26 performance at the Louder Than Life festival in Louisville, KY, the group revealed that the 41-year-old guitarist was hospitalized with a medical condition that would impact their current 2021 tour schedule.

“It is with deep regret that we have to postpone the rest of our US Tour,” said the band, “Richie has major medical heart condition issues which have landed him in hospital where he is being treated – in the meantime we are all sending love to our Falcon to wish him a speedy recovery...

“As soon as we have any updates from his doctors on when we can reschedule the dates we will of course announce them - tickets will be valid.”

The fall series was scheduled to wrap up in Hamilton, ON on November 5.

Faulkner – who joined the Judas Priest lineup in 2011 following the retirement of K.K. Downing – has appeared on the band’s last two albums, 2014’s “Redeemer Of Souls” and 2018’s “Firepower.”

The Rolling Stones dedicate US tour to Charlie Watts

The Rolling Stones dedicated their No Filter US Tour to Charlie Watts during an emotional opening night in St. Louis, MO on September 26.

The evening began with a video tribute to Watts – who passed away on August 24 at the age of 80 – before they took the stage at the Dome at America’s Center for the show-opener, “Street Fighting Man”, with Charlie’s friend and hand-picked stand-in, Steve Jordan, on drums.

As Variety notes, following the night’s second song, “It’s Only Rock ‘N’ Roll (But I Like It)”, co-founders Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, with guitarist Ronnie Wood, moved to the front of the stage and joined hands.

“I just want to say that it’s quite emotional seeing those images of Charlie up on the screen,” Jagger told the crowd, as seen in footage Richards shared the next day on social media. “This is our first tour that we’ve ever done without him. The reaction from you guys, everything you’ve said and we’ve heard from you, has been really touching. And I want to thank you very much for all your appreciation.

“We all miss Charlie so much, on the stage and off the stage, and we’d love to dedicate this tour to Charlie. Here’s to you, Charlie!”

The Rolling Stones delivered a 19-song set of classic tracks, and featured their 2020 single, “Living In A Ghost Town.”

The US tour will continue on September 30 with a concert in Charlotte, NC.

Hammett - who played at Green’s tribute concert last year ahead of its cinema screenings this past spring – performed the song with “Greeny”, a Gibson 1959 Les Paul Standard that once belonged to the late rocker.

“A pretty special moment tonight with @kirkhammett from @metallica joining us for Green Manalishi,” shared Judas Priest guitar tech Robb Philpotts on Instagram alongside a photo of Hammett with bassist Ian Hill and guitariost Andy Sneap. “I even managed to tick off a bucket list moment by getting a picture with Greeny before soundcheck. Tom Petty Wildflowers documentary to screen in cinemas worldwide

A new Tom Petty documentary about the making of his 1994 album, “Wildflowers”, will premiere in cinemas worldwide on October 20.

Directed by Mary Wharton, “Tom Petty, Somewhere You Feel Free: The Making of Wildflowers” offers an intimate look into the making of the rocker’s second solo effort through the period of 1993-1995 as he worked with legendary producer Rick Rubin for the first time.

The film presents archival footage of Petty and his band in the recording studio, behind-the-scenes on tour, and at home with his family, and includes never-before-seen video from a newly discovered archive of 16mm film, as well as new interviews with "Wildflowers" co-producer and Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell along with Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench, and many more.

The documentary comes on the heels of the release of a 2020 series of expanded editions of the 1994 record, which Petty wrote and recorded as a double album before his record label convinced him to trim it back to a single record; almost two decades later, “Wildflowers & All The Rest” delivered the second half of the album as originally intended.

Winner of the 2021 SXSW Audience Award, and Best Documentary Film at the Boulder Film Festival, “Tom Petty, Somewhere You Feel Free: The Making of Wildflowers” will debut in cinemas in sync with Petty’s birthday on October 20, with encore screenings in select cinemas on October 21.

Tickets are on sale now at TomPettyFilm.com.

A first preview of the project sees Petty recording the track, “Only A Broken Heart”, with Rubin, Campbell, and Tench reflecting on the album and the recording process.

The documentary will also see a free worldwide release in full 4K resolution via YouTube Originals on Petty’s YouTube Channel later this year.

Petty passed away in October of 2017 at the age of 66 in a Santa Monica, CA hospital after being found unconscious and in cardiac arrest at his Malibu home.

Journey drummer Deen Castronovo recovering following back surgery

Journey drummer Deen Castronovo is recovering at home following surgery on two herniated discs in his back.

“Hey all!,” shared the rocker on social media earlier this week. “September 23rd is the day I’m FINALLY getting surgery on my back! L-4 & L-5 discs are herniated! Grateful I could get it done with ample time to recover before Journey’s Residencies in December! Say some prayers!”

Catronovo’s social media team shared an update from his wife, Dee, following the procedure: "Just wanted to share an update from Deen from his wife Dee! He is home and doing great after his surgery!

‘Mr. Handsome is Home,’ says Dee. “Deen and I sincerely want to thank you all for the Love, Prayers and Kind Thoughts. We Love and Appreciate each and Every one of you. Let The Healing Begin.”

Following the addition of new members, drummer Narada Michael Walden and bassist Randy Jackson, in the spring of 2020, Castronovo rejoined the Journey lineup two months ago ahead of the group’s return to live performances with a club show and appearance at Lollapalooza in Chicago, IL.

Red Hot Chili Peppers to launch world tour in 2022

The Red Hot Chili Peppers will launch a world tour in 2022.

The group revealed the initial timeline for the series to begin in a faux-news video that saw singer Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea and drummer Chad Smith as characters in the roles of broadcasters, with guitarist John Frusciante playing himself and interviewed about the band’s plans.

“We’re going to do a tour starting in June 2022,” shared the guitarist. “The US leg will start in July 2022.”

The tour will see Frusciante’s return to the lineup following a ten-year absence after the group announced in December 2019 that they had parted ways with Josh Klinghoffer, who joining the Peppers in 2009; he played on 2011’s “I’m With You” and 2016’s “The Getaway” – both reached No. 2 on the US Billboard 200 and topped the charts in several countries – and appeared on a number of EPs issued in the past decade.

The reunion marks Frusciante’s third stint with the group, after a four-year run that began in the late 1980s and a decade-long tenure that started in the late 1990s.

Smith confirmed in January 2020 that the Red Hot Chili Peppers were actively working on new album with Frusciante; more details about the tour will be announced soon.
