Rock Hall CEO accuses Paul Stanley of KISS of racism

Following years of criticism by KISS members Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons about the validity of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame and the people who run it, Rock Hall CEO Joel Pereseman has accused Stanley of being “almost borderline racist” in some of his remarks about the institution.

In a new interview with Radio.com, Pereseman was asked to share his thoughts on the 2014 event, which saw the original KISS lineup inducted but not perform due to a disagreement with the Hall’s induction practices.

Speaking about Simmons’ speech, Pereseman said, “It was a lovely speech, it was actually kind of classy, as opposed to Paul’s. That speech was the best advertisement for [pointing out that] what we did was right. He’s been almost borderline racist, not in that speech, but in other interviews talking about how hip-hop artists shouldn’t be inducted because they don’t play instruments. It’s like, ‘What are you, kidding?’”

“And he [Stanley] talks about the nominating committee, and how those guys don’t buy records,” continued Pereseman. “Those guys buy records! They’re f—ing fans! Those guys are writers and critics and musicians. Those are the people who buy records and got into the business because they love music.”

Pereseman wasn’t specific about which interview(s) Stanley gave that led him to believe racism may be a part of the rocker’s stance, but both KISS members have been vocal opponents through the years to the Rock Hall’s inclusion of rap and disco artists based on the musical genres themselves.

During KISS’ induction speeches at New York’s Barclays Center on April 10, Stanley said music fans deserve more from Rock Hall organizers.

"The people, I believe, are speaking to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, and what they're saying is, 'We want more.',” he said. “They deserve more. They want to be a part of the induction. They want to be a part of the nomination. They don't want to be spoon-fed by a handful of people. Choices. The people pay for tickets. The people
buy albums. The people who nominate do not. Let's not forget that these are the people that make it all possible. We just benefit from it."

This past week, KISS released a new compilation, “KISS 40”, in honor of the band’s 40-year career.

The 2-CD package features one track from every major album release, live selections and “Reputation”, an unreleased demo from 1977.

KISS and Def Leppard will launch a co-headlining summer tour of North America on June 23rd in West Valley City, Utah.

Bret Michaels health status update

Bret Michaels continues to recover from a health scare that forced him to cut short a show in New Hampshire on Thursday, resulting in emergency care and a hospital stay that resulted in the rocker being diagnosed with the noro flu virus.

Under doctor’s orders, Michaels cancelled a Friday concert appearance in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and now Pete Evick, guitarist for the Bret Michaels Band, has issued another update of Bret’s status.

“I'm sorry to announce that Bret will not be performing in Albany, NY today,” posted Evick early Saturday. “As I've stated before, I have stood with Bret for over 9 years and have been around the world with him. I was there when his appendix burst, was there through the brain hemorrhage and watched him re-learn to walk and talk, not to mention countless blood sugar scares, but nothing like this. The complication of this brutal flu virus and how it has affected his blood glucose levels has been awful to watch. The perfect cocktail of such a virus along with diabetes and a high temperature is to be taken very seriously.”

“Today even more so than yesterday, it took a team of doctors, friends and family to convince Bret to not return to the stage,” Evick continued. “He doesn't believe it's the right idea, but those close to him along with all of you I'm sure would rather have him miss one more day and then take the next few days to recover rather than to cause more problems by pushing himself right? From my point of view, most non-diabetics take a week off work when they contract a flu like this, so two days is still pretty crazy. I have no doubt he will be up and running at 100 percent soon. We will certainly be in St Louis next week at Jefferson Barracks Veterans Memorial Amphitheater to continue the party. Until then, thank you all for your well wishes and support. We've all made sure Bret's received them all and he is both thankful and grateful.”

Bret’s next scheduled show in June 13 in St. Louis, as Evick mentioned.

Michaels was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of six. The Poison singer has been a public advocate of maintaining good health throughout his career.

In recent years, Michaels has faced a number of serious health issues, including an emergency appendectomy, a brain hemorrhage and heart surgery.

VIDEO: Sammy Hagar previews acoustic album

Sammy Hagar is sharing a preview of “Light Roast”, the forthcoming album of acoustic versions of some of his best known songs.

Hagar teamed up with Waboritas guitarist Vic Johnson for the project, which will be issued via his website in the near future.

In a newly-released video, Hagar and Johnson run through a rehearsal of “Halfway To Memphis”, a track from Sammy’s 2006 release, “Livin’ It Up!”

“It was just me and Vic live in the studio with no overdubs,” explains Hagar about the album. “Just two guitars, sometimes one guitar, sometimes just one voice, sometimes two voices.”

The sessions were inspired by the rehearsals for Sammy’s recent co-headlining appearance at the Acoustic-4-A-Cure benefit show, an event that saw acoustic sets by James Hetfield of Metallica, Billie Joe Armstrong of Green Day, Scott Mathews, Pat Monahan of Train, Joe Satriani, Nancy Wilson of Heart, and more.

Funds raised through ticket sales for the May 15th event at The Fillmore in San Francisco will benefit the Pediatric Cancer Program at the University Of California, San Francisco UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital.

"We recorded a lot of things before [2008’s] 'Chinese' [Democracy] was out," Axl tells Revolver magazine. "We've worked more on some of those things and we've written a few new things. But basically, we have what I call kind of the second half of 'Chinese'. That's already recorded. And then we have a remix album made of the songs from 'Chinese'. That's been done for a while, too. But after Vegas, we're going to start looking very seriously at what we're doing in that regard."

Bret Michaels health scare update

Bret Michaels’ team has issued an update on the singer’s health status following an incident onstage in New Hampshire on Thursday.

“As previously announced, Entertainer Bret Michaels was physically forced to leave the stage last night at the Palace Theater in Manchester, New Hampshire due to complications involving insulin shock & severe low blood sugar, along with other conditions which doctors later determined included exhaustion/dehydration/fever and the noro flu virus,” they revealed. “Michaels attempted to return to the stage to finish the show however it was clear to the band, crew, and audience that he would not be able to continue, as he walked of the stage and became violently ill.”

“Paramedics present at the show immediately responded and 911 was notified,” continued the update. “Unable to keep substance in his system, complications with his insulin levels and inability to balance his blood sugar levels arose. Michaels was rushed by ambulance to CMC (Catholic Medical Center), and monitored through the evening as doctors tried to bring his blood sugar back to healthy levels.”

“Under strict medical direction, Michaels will not be able to perform this evening in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania as doctors have ordered him to let the flu virus run its course and let his blood sugar rebalance and remain consistent,’ they concluded. “While hoping to perform tomorrow in Albany, type 1 diabetes complicates health issues such as the nora flu virus and must be monitored and taken very seriously.”

Pete Evick, guitarist for the Bret Michaels Band, broke the news from New Hampshire Thursday evening, writing “This is a message I never imagined I'd have to post. Tonight in Manchester, NH 3 songs into the set Bret had me sing a song as he rushed off stage. In the 9 years I've stood next to him, I've never seen a look like the one on his face as if I was a complete stranger. One of the crew returned instantly to notify me that Bret's blood sugar was extremely low.”

“He returned to the stage only to announce that he could not continue,” he added. “As you all know he is a health fanatic and fiercely monitors his blood sugar, he basically had to be dragged off the stage in his sickest of conditions. When I rushed to the bus he could barely speak, but begged me to apologize to the fans and seemed only concerned for them. As of now he is with paramedics being evaluated. We will keep you posted throughout the evening.”

Michaels was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes at the age of six. The Poison singer has been a public advocate of maintaining good health throughout his career.

In 2010, Michaels faced a number of serious health issues, including an emergency appendectomy, a brain hemorrhage and heart surgery.

Aerosmith guitarist wants to jam with Slash on upcoming tour

Aerosmith will team up with Slash this summer for the North American leg of the band’s Let Rock Rule tour, and guitarist Joe Perry says he wants to hook up and play some tunes with his longtime friend.

"I want to go out and play with him at least a couple of times," Perry tells Rolling Stone. "It's always fun to play something different. He might also play during our set. We're known for doing 'Mama Kin' together, but there are other songs he likes. ‘Rocks’ is one of his favorite records. I'm sure he's got a couple of songs he wants to play, and we'll oblige him. We're really good friends and it's going to be a really good tour."

Currently playing dates across Europe, Perry says the band is looking at changing up its setlist for the North American shows.

“We try to hit something from every decade," he says. "We're going to do a few off-the-wall ones that there will be some discussion about. It's started to get very heavy on the 1970s, with a lot of album cuts. Once we're back in the States, we'll definitely do more from the new album and things from the 1990s we haven't played in a long time. Off the top of my head, that might include [1989's] 'Monkey on My Back' or maybe even [1987's] 'Hangman Jury.'"

This fall, Perry will publish his autobiography, “Rocks: My Life In And Out Of Aerosmith."

Due October 7, Perry worked on the book with author David Ritz, who has written books with B.B. King, Jerry Wexler and Bettye LaVette.

Perry’s memoir follows similar works by bandmates Steven Tyler (2011’s “Does The Noise In My Head Bother You?”) and drummer Joey Kramer (2009’s “Hit Hard: A Story Of Hitting Rock Bottom At The Top”).

Iron Maiden singer to fly in WW1 air display at Sonisphere UK

Iron Maiden singer Bruce Dickinson and The Great War Display Team will stage a 12-minute air display in the skies above Knebworth Park prior to the band’s performance at Sonisphere UK on July 5.

The staged “dogfight” will commemorate the 100th Anniversary of The Great War; a 21st Century tribute to the daring - and often downright dangerous - exploits of both the English and German pilots who ruled Europe’s skies between 1914-1918.

The show features nine aircraft of 5 different types, all exact replicas of the planes used in WW1 combat. Bruce will be flying his very own Fokker Dr1 Triplane, the same model used by infamous German flying ace Manfred von Richthofen aka The Red Baron.

“The air show over Sonisphere is something I’m really excited about and we’re determined to put on an unforgettable display for everyone,” says Dickinson. “We’re planning an extravaganza of derring-do, especially when you consider the manoeuvres we’ll be performing are all based on true-life battles from a hundred years ago! What some of these fighter pilots achieved back then was nothing short of miraculous given the conditions they were working under and the seriousness of what was at stake. We hope to stage a memorable display which is equally entertaining and poignant, celebrating not only the bravery and heroics of all the pilots involved but remembering the sacrifices made on both sides.”

“Having been brought up on Biggles to the horror of my English teachers, the chance to fly a Fokker triplane Dr1 was second only to owning a Sopwith Camel,” he added. “A share in a Bucker Jungmann and a conversation with Great War team manager Gordon Brander led to a chance to buy a superbly constructed full size replica of the iconic
German fighter. Built by the late John Day I intend to display the aircraft with the team in commemoration not just of the Great War, but also as a tribute to one of the UK's premier engineer/builders.”

The Great War Display Team performs re-enactments throughout the UK and Europe.

Sonisphere UK will feature Iron Maiden’s final performance of the Maiden England world tour.

By the end of the trek, Iron Maiden will have played 102 shows in 32 countries to well over two million fans since starting in the USA in June 2012.

Black Star Riders welcome new bassist

Black Star Riders have announced the departure of bass player Marco Mendoza after the band’s current US tour (ending June 22), and the arrival of new bassist Robbie Crane.

Marco, a founding member of Black Star Riders, has decided to pursue other projects after potential conflicts in schedules.

His replacement will be Robbie Crane (formerly of Ratt, Vince Neil and Lynch Mob).

“I loved my time in Black Star Riders and want to thank all the fans for making the last year on road so successful,” says Maendoza. “I am sorry to be leaving the band but I feel it’s time for me to pursue other avenues, some of which I have already been working with, all of which I am very excited about. I wish the guys all success in the future and I am very happy that my friend Robbie Crane will continue to blaze with BSR.”

Mendoza appears on “So U”, the newly-released solo album by Journey guitarist Neal Schon.

“I am very excited to be a part of the Black Star Riders family,” says Crane. “As a long time fan of their music, I am thrilled to be a part of the band.”

“I am very sad to see Marco go,” says guitarist Scott Gorham. “We have been together in a band now for almost 20 years and Marco is my brother and we wish him well for the future. It’s an amicable parting of ways and we all respect that Marco wants to do other projects outside of Black Star Riders and there just isn’t time to do both.”

“Marco will always be part of the BSR family and a true friend of ours,” adds singer Ricky Warwick. “We are very happy to introduce Robbie Crane to everyone as the new BSR bass player. The guy killed the audition and we can’t wait to get on stage with him on our Euro run starting mid July and then, of course, in the studio in the Autumn for the recording of the second Black Star Riders Record.”

Black Star Riders are currently playing shows on a US tour and will begin a series of European dates in Holmfirth, UK on July 18.

Iron Maiden to donate concert funds to Serbian flood relief

Iron Maiden have announced that they will donate part of the revenue from their June 17 concert date in Belgrade, Serebia to the country’s flood relief.

Due to torrential rain in mid-May, Serbia and Bosnia were hit with the worst floods and landslides in more than a century, forcing the evacuation of tens of thousands and destroying thousands of buildings and homes.

Iron Maiden bassist Steve Harris believes Serbia "will come out stronger after the disaster of the recent floods," reports b92. He wished all those who have suffered from the disaster a return to normal life as soon as possible.

Maiden will perform in Belgrade as part of their Maiden England tour. The band started the final European leg this week in Barcelona, Spain; shows will wrap up with a headline performance at the UK Sonisphere Festival in July as part of the 40th Anniversary celebrations at Knebworth Park.

By the end of the tour, Iron Maiden will have played 102 shows in 32 countries to well over two million fans since starting in the USA in June 2012.

HBO are sharing a preview of Nirvana’s performance of “Lithium” with singer St. Vincent from the 2014 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame special they are airing this Saturday, May 31 at 8pm.

The three-hour broadcast will feature highlights of the April 10 event from New York City, which saw Nirvana, KISS, Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates, Cat Stevens, Linda Ronstadt, and The E Street Band all honored with inductions into the Rock Hall.

As for Nirvana, the Seattle band entered the Hall in their first year of eligibility, which is 25 years after the debut recording by an artist; in their case, it was based on the 1989 release of “Bleach.”

Annie Clark) performed “Lithium”, and New Zealand pop sensation Lorde closed out the event with a version of “All Apologies.”

Def Leppard singer’s Down N Outz release Rock And Roll Queen video

Down N Outz, the Mott The Hoople-inspired side project of Def Leppard singer Joe Elliott, have just released a video for “Rock And Roll Queen” from their new album, “The Further Adventures Of…”

The band filmed the clip – directed by Lee Ford – at Sheffield’s Corporation nightclub earlier this month.

Written by guitarist Mick Ralphs, the song originally appeared on Mott The Hoople’s 1969 self-titled debut album.

Down N Outz – who play only Mott-releated tunes (including songs by Mott, Ian Hunter and British Lions) – were formed specifically to open a series of 2009 reunion shows for Mott The Hoople at London’s Hammersmith Odeon.

The group features Elliott, The Quireboys' Paul Guerin (guitar), Guy Griffin (guitar) and Keith Weir (keyboards), plus Phil Martin (drums).

“The Further Adventures Of…” is the band’s third project, following 2010’s debut album, “My Re-Generation”, and the “Live At Hammersmith Apollo” DVD recorded during the 2009 shows.

"These songs make up a huge portion of who I am,” says Elliott, “and I feel incredibly privileged to have been able to record them and hopefully give them a new lease of life, which, quite frankly, is long overdue.”

Journey singer says Steve Perry should reunite with band

Following Steve Perry’s return to the live stage after 18 years this week, Journey frontman Arnel Pineda says Perry should reunite with his old band.

Perry joined alternative rock band EELS in St. Paul, Minnesota on Sunday to perform a pair of classic Journey tunes.

The crowd at the Fitzgerald Theater saw Perry take the stage with EELS for a track before launching into Journey’s “Open Arms” and “Lovin’, Touchin’, Squeezin’.”

A fan tweeted Pineda a link to video of Perry’s performance, to which he replied, “He should come back. His voice is still there. [I] missed that voice."

The dialogue continued, with Pineda offering up more thoughts on the subject.

"It will be cool if [Steve would] come to one of your shows and just come up and sing with you guys. That will definitely be epic, wrote the fan. "He can take over too,” replied Pineda. “It's his righteous place anyway. [I] wanna see them happy together."

Journey had their most successful commercial period with Perry, who joined the group in 1977; a string of multi-platinum albums followed.

Following Perry’s split from Journey in 1998, the band brought in Steve Augeri, followed by Jeff Scott Soto in 2006 and, in 2007, Filipino YouTube discovery (and Perry sound-alike) Pineda, who helped revitalize the band while their 1981 smash, “Don’t Stop Believin'”, emerged as one of the biggest selling songs of the new digital era.

Pineda and Journey recently launched an extensive summer North American tour with the Steve Miller Band.

In April, Pineda announced plans to record and release a solo album within the next year.

Ace Frehley releases new single Gimme A Feelin’

Original KISS guitarist Ace Frehley has released “Gimme A Feelin’”, as the lead single from his forthcoming solo album, “Space Invader.”

Due June 24 in North America (July 7 in Europe), the project is Frehley’s first new solo effort since 2009’s “Anomaly.”

The album includes Ace performing a cover of “The Joker” by The Steve Miller Band.

Frehley reteamed wit longtime friend and artist Ken Kelly for the cover; he famously designed the covers for KISS' "Destroyer" (1976) and "Love Gun" (1977) albums.

"It was very exciting when I was approached with the idea of doing an album cover for Ace," says Kelly. “I had spoken to Ace on a few occasions about the possibility, so I was delighted when it actually happened. I am very pleased with the results and proud to play a part of Ace's continuing successful career!"

"I've been talking with Ken Kelly since 2007 about painting a CD cover for me and it has finally happened!,” adds Frehley. “I couldn't be more excited about the new 'Space Invader' cover, and the music behind it is also going to rock your world!"

On April 10, Frehley and the original lineup of KISS were inducted into the 2014 Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame at a ceremony in New York, alongside Nirvana, Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates, Cat Stevens, Linda Ronstadt, and The E Street Band.

Jimmy Page comments on Stairway To Heaven lawsuit

Led Zeppelin guitarist Jimmy Page has responded to the recent headline-making lawsuit brought against the band over allegations they plagiarised the introduction of their iconic 1971 anthem, “Stairway To Heaven”, from a song by the group Spirit.

“That’s ridiculous,” Page told Liberation. “I have no further comment on the subject.”

The lawsuit, brought by the estate of Spirit guitarist Randy California and members of the band, claims the acoustic introduction to “Stairway” was lifted from their 1968 instrumental, “Taurus.”

The two bands crossed paths during Zeppelin’s first US tour, which saw the future rock legends open for Vanilla Fudge and Spirit, and that’s where the Los Angeles band claims Jimmy Page was exposed to “Taurus.”

California told journalist Jeff McLaughlin in the winter 1997 issue of Listener magazine that Led Zeppelin had stolen his song. “I’d say it was a ripoff,” California said. “And the guys made millions of bucks on it and never said ‘Thank you,’ never said, ‘Can we pay you some money for it?’ It’s kind of a sore point with me. Maybe someday their conscience will make them do something about it.”

California drowned while rescuing his 12-year-old son from a rip current in Hawaii in early 1997.

Spirit founding bassist Mark Andes and the trust that handles California’s royalties are working with Phladelphia lawyer Francis Alexander Malofiy, who says he is going to file a copyright infringement lawsuit and seek an injunction to block the rerelease of “Led Zeppelin IV” (as part of that band’s expanded reissue series, which starts next month).

“The idea behind this is to make sure that Randy California is given a writing credit on Stairway to Heaven,”
says Malofiy. “It’s been a long time coming.”

“Stairway” originally appeared on Led Zeppelin’s untitled 1971 album; it has since been referred to as “Led Zeppelin IV.”

On June 2 (June 3 in North America), the UK rockers are releasing expanded reissues of “Led Zeppelin I”, “Led Zeppelin II” and “Led Zeppelin III” the same day.

Deluxe editions of the group’s first three albums are the first projects announced as part of an extensive reissue program that will see all nine of the band’s studio albums reissued in chronological order, each remastered by Page.

The “Led Zeppelin IV” reissue will follow at a later date.

Axl Rose responds to being named World’s Greatest Singer

Axl Rose has issued a response to being named the “World’s Greatest Singer” in a recent survey by Concert Hotels.

The company declared the Guns N’ Roses leader the singer with the widest vocal range – spanning more than five octaves – placing Rose ahead of singers like Mariah Carey and Prince.

Now, Axl has issued a statement in response to the survey, which was also picked up by Spin magazine.

“Big thanks to all the fans and media for the props reacting to the Spin top vocalists article,” began Rose. “From what I could tell, the original article was for the most part only talking about the professionally recorded vocal range of the singers they compared calling the entire group ‘The World's Greatest Singers.’ It's very flattering and humbling to be included in such an illustrious ensemble.”

“If I had to say who I thought the best singers were,” he continued, “I'd say first that I don't know there's a definitive answer as in my opinion it's subjective, and second that my focus is primarily rock singers.”

“That said, I enjoy Freddie Mercury, Elvis Presley, Paul McCartney, Dan McCafferty, Janice Joplin, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Roger Daltrey, Don Henley, Jeff Lynne, Johnny Cash, Frank Sinatra, Jimmy Scott, Etta James, Fiona Apple, Chrissie Hynde, Stevie Wonder, James Brown and a ton of others (predominantly 70's rock singers) and would rather hear ANY of them anytime rather than me!,” Rose concluded.

Axl and Guns N’ Roses are currently in the middle of their second Las Vegas residency.

"No Trickery! An Evening Of Destruction", at The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino, will see the band perform a total of nine shows between May 21 and June 7.
