Pearl Jam producer talks about making new album

Brendan O’Brien produced the forthcoming Pearl Jam album, “Lightning Bolt”, and spoke with Rolling Stone about how the project came together.

“We started working about a year and a half ago, maybe even longer,” he said. “We did about six or seven songs that were ready. My idea was, ‘Let's do these songs, make them great and be all excited about them, and then that will propel the band into writing the rest of the songs. We'll get right back and do the rest of them.’ Well, that didn't happen. I was not able to get them into the studio for another year and a half.”

“They had a lot of things going on,” continued O’Brien. “I just don't think they were quite ready just yet to do the whole . . . Once they finish a record, I think they know they've gotta crank the whole thing up. If they're happy with the record, it sort of means they're going to get the whole thing rolling. I just don't think they were quite ready to do all of that. They all had various solo things going on. That's the best I can figure. You'll have to ask them. Whatever happened, we got together about five months ago and started back up. We had a group of songs, and we picked from those. The good news is that we had sort of a template of songs that we started in the first session, and we knew we had to do something at least that good, or better. If they weren't rising to that kind of level, we would just move on from there.”

The producer detailed how the songwriting process works within the group.

“At this point, most of the guys kind of work on their own thing separately and then bring them in, and they finish them as a group. That's how most of the stuff has worked out on the last few records I've worked on,” O’Brien explained. “I think it works out best for them when they do that. Everyone has their own sort of recording gear and their own little studios. I mean, Stone [Gossard] has a full-blown, actual studio. They all have their own recording rigs at home, so they're able to do their own demos. In the early days of ‘Vs.’ and ‘Vitalogy’ there was a certain amount of everybody getting in a room and kind of jamming out. Now, it's pretty much everyone puts together songs, and they finish them together as a band.”

“Lightning Bolt” will be released October 15; the lead single, “Mind Your Manners”, is out now.

Pearl Jam will kick off a fall North American tour October 11 in Pittsburgh.

Deep Purple singer says band would not exist if Ritchie Blackmore hadn’t left

Deep Purple singer Ian Gillan says the band would not exist if guitarist Ritchie Blackmore hadn’t left the group 20 years ago.

In the wake of the death of keyboardist and band founder Jon Lord last year, Gillan was asked recently by Buenos Aires, Argentina radio station Vorterix Rock 103.1 if he ever felt the desire to reconnect with Blackmore.

"Not in the slightest,” said Gillan. “Yes, we were very much in close touch with Jon; I had dinner with him in Tokyo, I had dinner with him in Paris, we were always sending e-mails to each other, and, of course, the relationship was fantastic. Jon left the band over ten years ago, but he was still very much our personal friend and, of course, the godfather of Deep Purple. As far as Ritchie was concerned, that's a different story altogether. I think we cut the thing…the band was dying."

"If you want to talk about Ritchie, I guess we have to; not many people do these days,” he continued. “But the truth of the matter is, from a historical point of view, the band was dying. If Ritchie had stayed in the band, it would have been the end of Deep Purple. The shows were getting shorter and shorter, the audiences were getting smaller and smaller. We were playing in small halls, and they weren't even full — they were half empty — and Ritchie was walking off stage every night. And so, when he left 20 years ago, it stopped raining and the sun came out, and Jon Lord, amongst others, started walking up straight again; his personality re-emerged. So did Roger Glover and Ian Paice; they became the people they were originally, instead of fending and cowering in case they upset Ritchie. And so this situation ended, and we're all glad it ended, [and] we had to rebuild.”

“And, of course, now the distance of time is so great that we just remember the good times,” explained the singer. “And we remember Ritchie as a great player, a great performer, a great writer, and I remember him as my roommate; I used to share rooms with him. But something happened with Ritchie, and that's the end of that. So we remember the past as it was; it was completely and totally different to Jon Lord. And so, no, I have no desire to pick up the phone to Ritchie, or have dinner with him, or meet him in Paris or Tokyo. I hope he's well, and I hope he's happy. And that's the end of it."

Tensions within the group caused by Blackmore first came to a head in the summer of 1973, when Gillan quit, and bassist Roger Glover was dismissed after their second tour of Japan. Gillan was replaced by David Coverdale while Glenn Hughes joined on bass following Glover’s departure.

Blackmore then left in 1975 to form Rainbow, with Tommy Bolin coming in on guitar. Deep Purple disbanded in 1976, only to reform the Gillan/Blackmore/Glover/Lord/Paice lineup for 1984’s “Perfect Strangers” album and tour. Gillan was fired in 1989 over tensions with Blackmore, but rejoined the band for the “Battle Rages On” album before the guitarist quit in the summer of 1993.

Gillan and Deep Purple are currently on a European tour in support of their new album, “NOW What?!”

Black Sabbath: Bill Ward explains passing on reunion album and tour

In an interview to promote his new rhythm art project, original Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward explains why he passed on participating in the band’s reunion album, “13”, and tour.

“I was offered a contract and I couldn't sign it,” Ward tells Guitar International. “As for some of the stories — I would never, ever show up for a commitment that I could not do physically. So that should answer that one. In the statement that I did last year, I was quite clear that I came to the end of the road and promised myself and my family that I would never sign a contract that was not workable. It was one of the toughest decisions that I ever had to make. Because I absolutely and without question wanted to play. I haven't left the band. Everybody thinks I have left the band. I didn't walk out; it wasn't like that at all. I just didn't sign the contact and life took its own course."

As a result of Ward’s decision, Ozzy Osbourne, Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler recorded with Brad Wilk of Rage Against The Machine, while Ozzy’s solo drummer, Tommy Clufetos, began handling live dates, icnluding the recently-launched North American tour.

There’s been talk that the band wanted Ward to join them on the road but only play a few songs each night.

“I'm the drummer in Black Sabbath so I want to do the entire show,” he explained. “I play all or nothing. Playing partially would kind of be aligning to my demise in Sabbath and minimize me. I'm the drummer in Sabbath and quite capable of doing the job.”

Ward was asked about Ozzy’s recent comments saying that the singer hopes the drummer will be a part of any future recordings by the band.

“I have a complete open mind to the idea,” he said. “All the nicety and placations in the world will mean nothing unless I get the right contract.”

Read Ward’s full interview at Guitar International here.

On Thursday, Ward will unveil his groundbreaking collection of fine art created from rhythm, “Absence Of Corners.”

Like a painter using brushes, Ward is creating fine artwork utilizing sticks that light in a variety of ways. His rhythms are captured for canvas bringing forward a new dimension to what was formally just sound.

The Eagles to reopen the Los Angeles Forum with three shows

The Eagles will play three shows to re-open the Los Angeles Forum in January.

The band will perform January 15, 17 and 18 at the venue, which was purchased last year by Madison Square Garden Co.

Billboard reports the company will eventually spend $100 million in its acquisition and remodeling of the Forum, which opened in 1967 and was sold to a church in 2000.

The Eagles, who played multi-night runs at the arena in 1975, '76 and '79, used the venue in 2009 as a rehearsal space prior to their Long Road Out of Eden tour.

"The building is a grand dame of all these [arenas], the first of its kind," Glenn Frey told Billboard Tuesday prior to a media event that included tours of the building currently under renovation. "It sounded great when we were rehearsing there. There's something about it and I don't [know] why it sounds the way it does. When we first played there, it looked cavernous. All the places (we played in the mid-'70s) appeared big. But I remember how good the Forum sounded and you can hear yourself."

When The Eagles take the stage at The Forum in January, it will be in the largest venue in the U.S. built specifically for music and live entertainment. That means no luxury suites, no scoreboards or setting up while they get rid of the ice rink from the hockey game the night before -- and it's still cold when the band takes the stage.

Ticket information for the shows will be announced soon.

The Eagles are currently on a short break in the middle of their “History Of The Eagles” North American tour; shows resume September 4 in Seattle.

Nirvana: In Utero 20th anniversary reissue announced

A 20th anniversary reissue of Nirvana’s 1983 album, “In Utero”, will be available in September.

A multi-format release of the Seattle band’s final album spreads more than 70 remastered, remixed, rare, unreleased and live recordings over configurations ranging from a 3-CD/1-DVD Super Deluxe Edition to a standard digital/CD remaster of the original album.

Material exclusive to the various versions of the "In Utero 20th Anniversary" reissue will include never-before-heard demos, B-sides, compilation tracks, and live material featuring the final touring lineup of Kurt Cobain, Krist Novoselic, Dave Grohl and Pat Smear...including the long-awaited release of the complete "Live And Loud" show from Seattle's Pier 48 on December 13, 1993.

A stand-alone single-disc DVD of the complete "Live And Loud" show along with several never-before-released bonus performances will also be available.

The follow-up to the 1991 breakthrough, “Nevermind”, “In Utero” debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 upon its release; the project went on to sell more than 12 million copies worldwide, including 5 million in the US alone.

A European tour to support the album was cut short following an overdose by Cobain in Rome on March 6, 1994; a month later, the guitarist committed suicide at his Seattle residence.

Sammy Hagar to perform new single on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno

Sammy Hagar will perform the first single from his forthcoming album, “Sammy Hagar & Friends”, on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno this Thursday, August 1.

“[We're] going to play the new single, 'Knockdown Dragout', and have something special planned for the second verse,” says Hagar. “See if you can spot it and figure out what it means!"

Hagar will perform on the show with his backing band, The Wabos, while the studio version features Kid Rock, Joe Satriani and Montrose’s Denny Carmassi.

The new album marks the Red Rocker’s first solo project in five years. Hagar teams up with a variety of artists, including Kid Rock, Nancy Wilson (Heart), Ronnie Dunn (Brooks & Dunn), Neal Schon (Journey, HSAS), Chickenfoot pals Chad Smith, Michael Anthony and Joe Satriani; Montrose bandmates Bill Church and Denny Carmassi, his solo band The Wabos and more on a collection of 10 new songs and unexpected covers.

“Sammy Hagar And Friends” is set for release on September 24 in North America, September 29 in the U.K., and September 27 in the rest of Europe.

The record will be available in a standard edition package, as well as deluxe edition packaged in a high-gloss digipak. The deluxe CD/DVD package includes an exclusive bonus audio track, "Space Station #5", recorded live at the Ronnie Montrose Tribute Concert held on April 29, 2012 in San Francisco, as well as the "making-of" album documentary which includes bonus video of "Knockdown Dragout", and more.
