Rock News Artist of The Year No. 5 – METALLICA

By the time 2023 began, Metallica had already been actively promoting its forthcoming new album, “72 Seasons”, announced a 2-year world tour in support of the set, and performed the live debut of the lead single, “Lux AEterna.”

The New Year delivered news that Metallica’s music was streamed 1.6 billion times on Spotify in 2022 as it reached 72 million listeners in 183 countries while marking the fourth year in a row that the group's songs were played more than a billion times on the streaming platform in a 12-month calendar period.

More preview tracks would surface before the album’s release in April, which was launched with an appearance and performance on The Howard Stern Show and a rare week-long residency on ABC-TV’s Jimmy Kimmel Live.

“72 Seasons” debuted atop the US Billboard 200 and the UK charts as the band opened its M72 World Tour in Amsterdam; the series sees the group playing two nights in every city it visits on a new in-the-round stage — with each "No Repeat Weekend" featuring two completely different setlists and support lineups.

As the tour hit North America in August, Metallica’s 1991 classic, “Nothing Else Matters”, made headlines when it surpassed one billion streams on Spotify.

Metallica was among the headliners at the Power Trip Festival in India, CA in October and, as the year wound down, the group were nominated for multiple honors at the 2023 Billboard Music Awards and the 2024 Grammy Awards.

Metallica is currently scheduled to resume the M72 World Tour in Munich, Germany in late May.
