Slash and Billy Gibbons to lead Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute at CMT Music Awards

Slash and Billy Gibbons are among the rockers set to lead a Lynyrd Skynyrd tribute at the CMT Music Awards in Austin, TX on Sunday, April 2.

Cody Johnson and Paul Rodgers will handle lead vocals alongside guitarists Slash, Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, and Warren Haynes for a one-time-only performance of a pair of timeless Lynyrd Skynyrd hits, just four weeks after the passing of the group’s last original founding member Gary Rossington.

Longtime Rolling Stones pianist Chuck Leavell will be on hand, while veteran Nashville studio and touring musicians Ethan Pilzer and Rich Redmond will perform on bass and drums respectively, with LeAnn Rimes and Wynonna Judd filling the role of "The Honkettes."

Dale Krantz Rossington, band member and wife of late guitarist Gary Rossington, is set to attend the once-in-a-lifetime musical celebration alongside fellow Lynyrd Skynyrd band members Johnny Van Zant and Rickey Medlocke.

Lynyrd Skynyrd has sold more than 28 million records in the US since the 1973 release of their debut album, "Pronounced 'Leh-'nerd 'Skin-'nerd".

Kelsea Ballerini and Kane Brown will host the 2023 CMT Music Awards LIVE from Austin, TX's Moody Center this Sunday, April 2nd (8:00-11:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network and is available to stream live and on demand on Paramount+.*
