Following an introduction by host and Global Citizen ambassador Priyanka Chopra Jonas, Metallica rocked an 8-song set that opened with a pair of tunes from 1984’s “Ride The Lightning” – “Creeping Death” and “For whom The Bell Tolls” – before going five tracks deep from their classic 1991 self-titled album and closing with “Master Of Puppets.”
“We’re honored to announce that we’ll be a part of this year’s Global Citizen Festival in New York’s Central Park,” announced Metallica last month. “Since it began lighting up Central Park’s Great Lawn in 2012, the Global Citizen Festival has become the world’s longest-running music festival campaigning for an end to extreme poverty and demanding that world leaders take action.”
Since 2012, Global Citizens have taken over 30 million actions, leading to over $41.1B in dispersed funding that’s impacting the lives of over 1.15 billion people.
This year’s event featured sets by Coldplay, Mariah Carey, Billie Eilish, Cindy Lauper and Paul Simon, among others in New York while Usher, SZA and others performed in Accra, Ghana as part of the 65th anniversary of the country’s independence and the 20th anniversary of the African Union.
