Ace Frehley and Peter Criss reunite to perform KISS classics at Creatures Fest
Original KISS members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss reunited at Creatures Fest in Nashville, TN on May 27 to perform a pair of classic tracks from their former band, and video from the event has surfaced online.
After the first three songs of his set, Frehley welcomed Criss to the stage to handle lead vocals for the 1976 “Rock And Roll Over” hit, “Hard Luck Woman”, and to sit in on drums and vocals for the group’s 1974 “Hotter Than Hell” track, “Strange Ways.”
The weekend festival also featured performances by, among others, KISS alumni Vinnie Vincent and Bruce Kulick, with Criss joining Kulick during his set and both guitarists joining Vincent during his appearance.
Gene Simmons recently reiterated his public invitation to Frehley to perform with KISS on the band’s End Of The Road farewell tour.
"The invitations still stand,” tweeted Simmons in late April. “Jump up on stage with us for encores. The fans would love it."
The current KISS lineup sees guitarist Tommy Thayer perform using Frehley’s spaceman makeup and stage gear while longtime drummer Eric Singer appears in Criss’ cat makeup and stage persona.
Frehley reunited with KISS for the first time in 17 years during a fall 2018 acoustic performance on KISS Kruise 8, just two months before the classic rock group launched the farewell series in Vancouver, BC in early 2019; the band resume the trek with summer shows in Euope starting June 1 in Dortmund, Germany.

Jimi Hendrix to be honored with rare second historical UK blue plaque
Jimi Hendrix will be honored with a rare, second UK historical blue plaque as part of a June 10 event at London’s Hard Rock Hotel in Marble Arch.
The permanent marker will commemorate Jimi’s last London residence, known then as the Cumberland Hotel, before his untimely death in 1970.
As part of the festivities, there will be a screening of the documentary “Music, Money, Madness… Jimi Hendrix in Maui”, which received a Grammy nomination for Best Music Film last year; there will also be an exclusive Q&A with Jimi’s sister Janie Hendrix, his producer/engineer Eddie Kramer, and the film’s director John McDermott.
Festivities will be preceded on June 9 by a rooftop performance from Mississippi-based blues artist Christone “Kingfish” Ingram.
Beyond that performance, a special presentation of Linda McCartney's images of Jimi Hendrix has been added to the slate of June 10th events. Over the course of her career as a freelance photographer, (then) Linda Eastman photographed Hendrix on multiple occasions, with one of her images personally selected by the guitarist for the original artwork for his “Electric Ladyland” album, although it was replaced prior to release and didn’t official grace the cover until a reissue four years ago.
Hendrix has been greatly admired for his pioneering musical influence and this will the UK’s second plaque to honor him. The first blue plaque recognizing him was unveiled in 1997 at his 1968-69 Mayfair residence by English Heritage – the national plaque charity that since 1966 celebrates the links between notable figures of the past and building in which they lived and worked. There is also a Blue Plaque at that same address (25 Brook Street) commemorating the fact that German-born composer George Frideric Handel lived there from 1723 until his death in 1759.
With two Blue Plaques, Hendrix is in rarified company of the few who have their name grace multiple Blue Plaques; these notables include Mahatma Gandhi, Prime Ministers Lord Palmerston and William Gladstone, and author William Makepeace Thackeray.
This new honor is bestowed by the Nubian Jak Community Trust (NJCT). Founded in 2006, NJCT is the only commemorative plaque and sculpture scheme focused on memorializing the historic contributions of Black and minority people of various ethnic origins in Britain and beyond. The NJCT has since installed more than 71 commemorative blue and black plaques throughout the UK, including to an array of musicians from Samuel Coleridge Taylor to Bob Marley.
“I’m so proud of my brother Jimi and his being honored again in London,” says Janie Hendrix. “His mission was to spread love across the world through his music, and we continue to see that come to fruition all these years later. Eddie, John and I all look forward to interacting with people on June 10, whose lives were touched by Jimi in London – a city that was so important to him and his career.”

David Bowie to release Ziggy Stardust 50th anniversary vinyl editions
David Bowie will release two very special 50th anniversary vinyl editions of his 1972 album classic, “The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars”, on June 17.
Originally introduced with the hit lead single, “Starman”, the record introduced the world to the singer’s iconic, gender-bending stage persona Ziggy Stardust.
The project reached No. 5 on the UK album charts and went on to become regarded as a groundbreaking and influential project that was added to the National Recording Registry in 2016 by the US Library of Congress.
To mark its 50th anniversary, “The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust…” will be issued as a limited edition half-speed mastered LP and a picture disc, featuring the same master and a replica promotional poster for the album.
This new pressing was cut on a customised late Neumann VMS80 lathe with fully recapped electronics from 192kHz restored masters of the original Trident Studios master tapes, with no additional processing on transfer; the half speed was cut by John Webber at AIR Studios.
Bowie laid to rest the Ziggy Stardust persona in July 1973 at his infamous last show with the Spiders From Mars at London’s Hammersmith Odeon, but Ziggy’s impact reverberates to this day.

Soundgarden Nirvana supergroup 3rd Secret stream Rhythm Of The Ride video
The Soundgarden/Nirvana supergroup 3rd Secret are streaming video for “Rhythm Of The Ride”, as the latest track from their recently-released self-titled debut album.
The footage features Krist Novoselic on acoustuic guitar alongside vocalists Jennifer Johnson and Jillian Raye in a live performance captured at Murky Slough studios.
3rd Secret initially came together when Novoselić and Raye started collaborating on new material in 2020, after which the Nirvana rocker uncovered some jams from 2001 that were eventually completed alongside more recently written songs.
The band – who bills themselves as Alt-Folk/Grunge – also includes Soundgarden guitarist Kim Thayil, Soundgarden and Pearl Jam drummer Matt Cameron, and Void guitarist Bubba Dupree.
“There are no plans for any live performances at this time,” says the group. “We are happy 3rd Secret is out!”

Neil Young to issue unreleased 2001 Crazy Horse album Toast
Neil Young and Crazy Horse will release a shelved 2001 album, “Toast”, on July 8.
Young and the band recorded the project at Toast Studios in San Francisco; for the past two decades, the record has been whispered about in collectors’ circles in hushed tones, as the guitarist has dropped pieces of information about it here and there, especially as it contains three never-before-released songs.
“The music of Toast is about a relationship,” shared the rocker on his Neil Young Archives site last year. “There is a time in many relationships that go bad, a time long before the breakup, where it dawns on one of the people, maybe both, that it's over. This was that time.”
The project is being previewed with the lead track, “Standing In The Light Of Love.”
“Toast” will be available on CD, and double vinyl at The Greedy Hand Store at Neil Young Archives (NYA) and music retailers everywhere, and digitally at the Xstream Store at NYA and most DSP’s. Purchasers of Vinyl and CD at The Greedy Hand Store will receive the hi-res digital download from the Xstream Store at NYA.

Yes drummer Alan White dead at 72
Yes drummer Alan White died May 26 at the age of 72 following a brief illness.
“It is with deep sadness that Yes announce Alan White, their much-loved drummer and friend of 50 years, has passed away, aged 72, after a short illness,” said the band in a statement on social media. “The news has shocked and stunned the entire Yes family. Alan had been looking forward to the forthcoming UK Tour, to celebrating his 50th Anniversary with Yes and their iconic ‘Close To The Edge’ album, where Alan’s journey with Yes began in July 1972.
“He recently celebrated the 40th Anniversary of his marriage to his loving wife Gigi. Alan passed away, peacefully at home.”
Alan is considered to be one of the greatest rock drummers of all time. He was born in 1949 in County Durham and joined Yes on 30th July 1972 for the Close to the Edge Tour. He had previously worked with John Lennon’s Plastic Ono band after a phone call in 1969 to play at the Toronto Rock Festival. Alan continued working with Lennon including on the "Imagine" album and with George Harrison on “All Things Must Pass.” He also worked with several other musicians over the years, including Ginger Baker’s Air Force, Joe Cocker, Gary Wright, Doris Troy and Billy Preston to name but a few.
White was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Yes in 2017.
A number of health setbacks since 2016 had restricted Alan’s time on stage with Yes on recent tours with Jay Schellen filling in and Alan joining the band, to great applause, towards the end of each set.
Yes will dedicate their 50th Anniversary Close to the Edge UK Tour in June to White.

Santana and Chris Stapleton debut video for new single Joy
Santana is debuting a video for “Joy”, a track featuring Chris Stapleton that appears on the band’s latest album, “Blessings And Miracles.”
“I was very intrigued to work with Chris,” Carlos Santana explains. “We talked on the phone about the Covid situation and how there's so much fear in the world, and I said, 'We need to create music as a healing force. We must bring hope and courage and disinfect twisted minds infected with darkness.'
"That gave him the ammunition to write such incredible words. Somewhere I said, 'flying on the wings of angels,' so it's a collaboration. And what an incredible song it is. The choir in it - it's like the Staple Singers."
“Blessings And Miracles” sees Santana joined by an all-star lineup that includes Rob Thomas, Steve Winwood, Chick Corea, Corey Glover and Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett, among others.
The band are currently playing dates as part of the “An Intimate Evening with Santana: Greatest Hits Live” shows at the House of Blues Las Vegas at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino.

David Bowie streams teaser trailer for Moonage Daydream documentary
David Bowie’s estate is streaming a teaser video trailer for the forthcoming documentary, “Moonage Daydream”, in sync with its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.
Directed by Brett Morgen, the project is billed as “a new feature film, concert documentary and experiential cinematic odyssey” that follows Bowie’s life and musical career.
The first film sanctioned by Bowie’s estate shares its title with the song from the singer’s 1972 album classic, “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars,” which introduced the world to his iconic, gender-bending, and groundbreaking stage persona Ziggy Stardust.
The film will feature Bowie through his own voice and feature 48 musical tracks, mixed from their original stems.
Morgen was granted access to Bowie’s archives by his estate in 2017 and presented him with master recordings as well as never-before-seen 35mm and 16mm reels of unreleased performances, all of which will appear on screen for the first time.

Eric Clapton shares 1994 performance of Motherless Child
Eric Clapton is sharing video of a 1994 performance of the blues classic, “Motherless Child”, as the latest preview to the June 24 release of the live concert film and companion soundtrack, “Nothing But The Blues.”
The guitarist was captured over two nights at the Fillmore in San Francisco, CA on tour in support of the blues covers album, “From The Cradle”, in the film, which was broadcast once in the U.S. on PBS in 1995 and nominated for an Emmy Award and now newly-upgraded to 4K for its long-awaited official release.
Written and produced by Scooter Weintraub and executive produced by Martin Scorsese, the documentary includes an in-depth interview with Clapton conducted by Scorsese. Throughout the interview, Clapton discusses his love for the blues and the profound impact bluesmen like Muddy Waters and B.B. King had on his music. Many of those artists (Robert Johnson, Howlin’ Wolf, Buddy Guy, T-Bone Walker) appear in the film through vintage performances, interviews, and photographs.
At the heart of the film and audio formats are Clapton’s performances of blues standards and lesser-known blues songs. The CD features 17 songs; the double LP 18, and the DVD and Blu-ray each contain 20 songs.
In addition to the film, Reprise will release a new soundtrack with more than an hour of previously unreleased live performances recorded during the 1994 tour.
“Nothing But The Blues” and the accompanying soundtrack will be available in multiple formats: The Super Deluxe Edition comes with the documentary on Blu-ray, the soundtrack on both 2-LP vinyl and CD, a bonus CD with four extra tracks “Driftin’,” County Jail Blues,” “Kid Man Blues,” and “Too Bad,” and an exclusive hardcover book with memorabilia, including a numbered lithograph, 12x24 poster, Clapton guitar string set, custom guitar picks, and an exclusive bandana.
The documentary will also be available separately on Blu-ray and DVD , while the soundtrack will be issued as a standalone on CD and 2LP vinyl; the music will also be available from digital and streaming services on the same day.

“During routine Covid-19 testing, we have discovered that a member of our touring party has tested positive,” shared the group on social media. “Out of an abundance of caution, we must regretfully cancel the remaining shows on our tour with Halestorm. The 5 dates are Evansville, Tulsa, Deadwood, Moorhead, and Missoula. Halestorm and Black Stone Cherry will still be performing as scheduled.
“Thank you to everybody who has come out to see a show, and an extra special thank you to Halestorm. We’ll be back out there as soon as we can.”
The spring 2022 series is scheduled to wrap up in Missoula, MT on May 30.
Sone Temple Pilots experienced the same issue on a US tour last fall that resulted in the band cancelling headline shows an appearance at the Welcome To Rockville festival in Daytona Beach, FL.
The group’s next scheduled performance is set for the Taste Addison festival in Addison, TX on June 4.
Last year, Stone Temple Pilots issued an expanded 25th anniversary reissue of their third album, “Tiny Music…Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop”; their latest studio release is the 2020 acoustic record, “Perdida.”

Ronnie James Dio to release expanded Holy Diver reissue
Ronnie James Dio’s team have announced plans to release a remixed and expanded version of his 1983 debut album, “Holy Diver”, on July 8.
Timed to arrive in sync with what would have been the late rocker’s 80th birthday on July 10, the “Holy Diver” Super Deluxe Edition delivers two versions of the project: the first is a new mix of the album from the original analog tapes by Joe Barresi (Tool, Queens of the Stone Age, Slipknot); the second is a newly-remastered version of the original 1983 mix.
The package will also include a previously-unreleased recording of Dio captured live in a 1983 show at Selland Arena in Fresno, CA during the Holy Diver Tour – and unreleased outtakes for several album cuts, including unheard takes for “Invisible,” “Straight Through The Heart,” and a version of “Rainbow In The Dark” that boasts an alternative guitar solo. There’s also an early version of “Evil Eyes,” a song that would resurface on Dio’s 1984 follow-up album, “The Last in Line.”
A selection of rarities rounds out the new collection with mono and stereo 7” single edits for “Rainbow In The Dark” and a version of “Evil Eyes” that was released in 1983 as the B-side to “Holy Diver.”
The 2022 reissue will be available in multiple formats, including 4CD and 2LP sets.
Dio recorded “Holy Diver” following his 1982 exit from Black Sabbath, putting together a lineup that included drummer Vinny Appice (Dio’s Black Sabbath bandmate), bassist/keyboardist Jimmy Bain (Dio’s Rainbow bandmate) and guitarist Vivian Campbell.
The album delivered two singles – the title track and “Rainbow In The Dark” – that delivered significant airplay in the US and helped push the record to sales of more than 2 million copies in the region.
Dio passed away in 2010 at the age of 67 after a battle with stomach cancer.
The official Ronnie James Dio documentary, “Dio: Dreamers Never Die”, premiered earlier this year at the SXSW Film Festival in Austin, TX; directed by Don Argott and Demian Fenton and executive produced by Wendy Dio, the project traces the singer’s legendary career, which included stints with Rainbow and Sabbath, among others, alongside his solo years.
