“We’re BAAAAACK!!,” announced the band on social media just hours before the event. “It’s been 738 days since our last live show, but hey, who’s counting?! Well, that s**t all stops tonight!!! ‘Wait,’ you say, ‘there’s a show tonight?’ Yes! Join us this evening, September 16th, in our hometown of San Francisco with real-live fans in the house. We’ll be going back to our club roots by taking the stage at The Independent on Divisadero, and we cannot wait to see you!”
The club put single wristbands for the 500-capacity venue on sale in the afternoon for $20 each, and they went fast.
“UPDATE: Wow - you guys sold this show out in an hour!!,” shared Metallica. “We're psyched to see you out there tonight!”
Metallica opened the show with their 1983 classic, “Whiplash”, and rocked through another 14 tracks before closing out the performance with another “Kill 'Em All” fan favorite, “Seek & Destroy.”
“It had been 738 days since we played in front of an audience...,” posted the group the day after the show. “SF!!!!! Thank you for comin’ out to The Independent last night on such short notice! It was so amazing to play for you again! We’ll see ya again in December at Chase Center for the 40th…”
The group’s appearance came days after the release of a series of 30th anniversary reissues of their self-titled fifth album.
Metallica will next be seen at the Louder Than Life festival In Louisville, KY next weekend and will deliver two performances at Sacramento, CA’s Aftershock event in early October.
