Rock News Artist of The Year No. 8 – THE ROLLING STONES

Following their sweep of the 2019 hennemusic Rock News Awards, The Rolling Stones began 2020 by announcing dates for a summer tour of North America as they planned to continue their multi-year No Filter concert series with appearances set to begin in May.

In March, the band postponed the trek as the pandemic continued to affect economies around the world, and then they delivered a virtual performance of a 1969 classic as part of the “One World Together At Home” coronavirus concert special in April before its inclusion on a companion charity album that saw proceeds donated to Global Citizen in support of the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for the World Health Organization as powered by the UN Foundation.

The Stones released a new single, “Living In A Ghost Town”, in April that perfectly fit the mood of the pandemic lockdown – even though it was primarily recorded a year earlier as part of sessions for a new album.

“So the Stones were in the studio recording some new material before the lockdown,” explained Mick Jagger at the time, “and there was one song we thought would resonate through the times that we’re living in right now. We’ve worked on it in isolation.”

In May, the group launched a limited-edition weekly streaming series that shared concert footage from throughout their career as a way of entertaining fans while the live music industry remained shutdown; the band extended that theme by screening their 2016 concert film, “Havana Moon”, at drive-ins across North America in the summer.

Unreleased songs from the “Goats Head Soup” sessions began surfacing ahead of the September release of a series of expanded reissues of the 1973 album, while a previously-unreleased 1989 concert film, “Steel Wheels Live – Atlantic City, New Jersey”, arrived later that same month.

As the Stones continued to work on new music, Keith Richards released an expanded edition of “Live at the Hollywood Palladium, December 15, 1988” in November.
