Rock News Artist of The Year No. 3 – FOO FIGHTERS

As 2020 would mark the 25th anniversary of the Foo Fighters' self-titled debut, the band had plans to celebrate the milestone throughout the year.

January began with the group revisiting the 1995 record on the latest EP from their ongoing archive series, and was followed by news of an anniversary spring tour of North America that would see the outfit revisiting stops from the first tour.

In March, Foo Fighters revealed plans to host the inaugural D.C. Jam festival at FedEx Field in Washington, DC on July 4; in the spirit of a pair of Cal Jam events in 2017 and 2018, the rockers curated the event that will see them joined by a lineup that includes Chris Stapleton, Pharrell Williams, The Go-Go's and Band Of Horses, among others.

March also brought news that the spring tour was postponed due to the coronavirus outbreak, which freed up time for Dave Grohl to launch an Instagram stories feature.

Grohl performed solo during the iHeart Living Room Concert For America just weeks before the 2002 Foo Fighters classic, “Times Like These”, was covered by an all-star lineup of UK artists in support of the global effort to stay safe and stay home during the pandemic.

Like many artists, the band began sharing live concert footage as a way of staying in touch with fans (here and here), while Grohl delivered a surprise acoustic performance from isolation for a New York City nurse on ABC-TV’s Jimmy Kimmel Live.

By August, the Foo Fighters cancelled the North American tour and the group wouldn’t make much noise before resurfacing in October for a live set at The Troubadour in Los Angeles as part of the Save Our Stages benefit show.

In early November, the band dropped a new single, “Shame Shame”, announced a new album and performed on Saturday Night Live – all in the same day – and went on to share a 25th anniversary retrospective entitled “Times Like Those.”

The Foo Fighters will release “Medicine At Midnight” on February 5, 2021.
