Rock News Artist Of The Year No. 6 – AEROSMITH
After Aerosmith ended a late 2017 South American tour early as Steven Tyler returned home to address a health issue, fans weren’t sure what the Boston rockers might have in store for 2018.
The new year began with word that the group‘s 1973 classic, “Dream On”, was among the inductees into the 2018 Grammy Hall Of Fame.
Guitarist Joe Perry performed alongside an all-star lineup at a sold-out record release show for his latest solo album, “Sweetzerland Manifesto”, at The Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles on January 16, while Tyler was featured in a pair of Kia commercials in sync with their broadcast during Super Bowl 52 on February 4.
In March, the singer announced dates for a summer solo run of North America and Europe ahead of the May 10 world premiere of the documentary, “Out On A Limb”, at the 49th Nashville Film Festival; the project traces the creation of Tyler’s 2016 debut country solo studio album, “We're All Somebody From Somewhere”, and the accompanying “Out On A Limb” tour.
Following a brief series of spring solo shows that included his bandmate Brad Whitford, Perry reconnected with supergroup Hollywood Vampires in May to launch a handful of North American dates before they headed to Europe for six weeks.
A legendary piece of Aerosmith history made headlines in August when the original van used by the Boston rocker on tour in the 1970s was found in the Massachusetts woods by the hosts of The History Channel series American Pickers.
The group announced details for a spring 2019 Las Vegas residency during an August 15 appearance on NBC-TV’s The Today Show; "Aerosmith: Deuces Are Wild" will see them perform an 18-date series (consisting of a pair of 9-show runs) at the Park Theater at the new Park MGM resort in Las Vegas starting next April.
Tyler and Extreme guitarist Nuno Bettencourt streamed their cover of The Rolling Stones' 1971 classic, “Brown Sugar”, ahead of the late September release of an all-star tribute album to the sounds of Muscle Shoals, Alabama.
On November 10, Perry collapsed in his dressing room and was treated by paramedics on scene before being rushed to hospital following a guest appearance with Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden; he would later cancel a 2-week series of solo dates while he recovered at home.
Aerosmith are scheduled to open 2019 with a performance at the Super Bowl Music Fest in Atlanta, GA on February 1.
