Neil Young announces online music archive
Neil Young has announced plans to launch an online archive tracing his entire musical history.
“Every single, recorded track or album I have produced is represented,” he writes as an introduction to neilyoungarchives.com. “It is always current. You can browse the music I made between today’s date and 1963, when I made my first recording in Canada and it was released as a 45 RPM single.”
Billed as “coming soon”, Young and his team have been diligently compiling detailed information about his recordings for the project, which he says serves a dual purpose.
“I must admit that I built this for myself as for everyone else,” he writes. “I am very interested in collecting and organization, as well as mechanical things and old school record keeping.”
Arranged as a ‘filing cabinet’, the project allows users to explore the archives, which includes a current ‘info card’ detailing song information, anecdotes, press clippings, videos, photographs and more.
An audiophile who opened the high-resolution audio service and player Pono in 2015, Young’s archives will be streamed via his recently-launched XStream Music streaming service, which he describes as an "adaptive streaming service that changes with available bandwidth" to provide the listener with the best possible audio quality regardless of the device.

Young launched his archival series in 2008, including a series of live releases and the 2009 box set, “The Archives Vol. 1 1963–1972.” The second volume was expected in 2011 and now will see its inclusion in the online archive.
Young will issue an unreleased 1976 album, “Hitchhiker”, on September 8.
The 10-track acoustic set was originally recorded in one session at Indigo Studios in Malibu, CA on August 11, 1976.
The album’s title track appeared on Young’s 2010 album, “Le Noise”, while the package delivers stripped-down versions of fan favourites “Powderfinger”, “Human Highway” and “Pocahontas”, and features two previously unreleased tunes: “Hawaii” and “Give Me Strength.”
