Ghost win Swedish Grammis Award for Popestar

Ghost won the "Best Hard Rock/Metal" category at the Swedish Grammis Awards on Tuesday at Konserthuset in Stockholm.

The band were honored for their 2016 EP “Popestar”, ahead of fellow nominees Amaranthe, Cult Of Luna & Julie Christmas, Dark Tranquillity and In Flames.

The event marked Ghost’s third win at the Grammis, following a 2014 award for 2013’s “Infestissumum” and last year’s prize for 2015’s “Meliora.”

Upon its release last fall, “Popestar” made US history by becoming the first EP to land at No. 1 on the US Billboard Top Rock Albums in the chart's 10-year run.

Led by the lone original track and lead single “Square Hammer”, the package includes covers of songs originally recorded by Eurythmics, Echo & The Bunnymen, Simian Mobile Disco and Imperiet.

Ghost are currently working on new music with plans to release their fourth album later this year.

VIDEO: Linkin Park perform Heavy on The Late Late Show with James Corden

Linkin Park were joined by Kiiara for a performance of “Heavy” on CBS-TV’s The Late Late Show with James Corden on Tuesday, and video from the program is available.

The tune – which has just debuted at No. 52 on the Billboard Hot 100 – is the lead single from Linkin Park’s forthcoming album, “One More Light.”

"One of the reasons why we chose 'Heavy' as the first single is because it is really the core sound of the album,” Mike Shinoda tells Billboard. “This wasn't a scenario where the whole album sounds one way and the single sounds different. This is how the album sounds.

"So we wanted to go out with a song like that, where everybody can get a sense of the direction of this body of work."

Due May 19, the band’s seventh album marks the follow-up to 2014's "The Hunting Party", which debuted at No. 3 on the US Billboard 200.

Robert Plant and The Sensational Space Shifters perform the Led Zeppelin classic, “Whole Lotta Love”, in a preview to the March 5 AXS TV broadcast premiere of the singer in concert at the Ace Hotel in Los Angeles, CA last fall.

The rocker’s set also kicks off AXS TV’s new Sunday Night Rocks series, which will feature concert broadcast premieres by artists including Def Leppard, Blondie, Ringo Starr and His 2016 All Starr Band, Mavis Staples, Alan Jackson, and a tribute to Kenny Loggins.

“Throughout the history of rock, few artists have been as influential and enduring as Robert Plant,” says AXS TV’s vice president of music programming and production Evan Haiman. “This incredible concert showcases the music icon at the top of his game, putting his signature vocals on full display as he blazes through an expansive setlist that will satisfy die-hard fans and curious newcomers alike.”

Robert Plant and The Sensational Space Shifters live at the Ace Hotel will be broadcast on AXS TV on Sunday, March 5 at 10 pm EST

Soundgarden have announced the first series of dates for a spring tour of North America.

Following three festival appearances in Florida in late April, the Seattle band will begin their US headlining run at the Fox Theatre in Atlanta, GA on May 3; they’ll be joined by The Pretty Reckless and The Dillinger Escape Plan on select dates.

A special ticket pre-sale for fans who are signed up to soundgardenworld.com and chriscornell.com will launch February 28 at 10 AM local time, with general public seats going on sale March 3 at 10 AM, local time.

Last year, the group acquired the original multi-track tapes to the project and connected with engineer Jack Endino to create a fresh mix of the debut.

The expanded reissue also includes the newly-created “Ultramega OK EP”, which presents newly-remixed, early versions of six songs that would make the final set; these were originally recorded in 1987 by Endino and Chris Hanzsek at Seattle's Reciprocal Recording.

The “Ultramega OK” reissue will be available on CD, 2LP, download and cassette.

Soundgarden have been working on the follow-up to 2012’s “King Animal” with plans to release a new album this year.

Alter Bridge announce European tour

Alter Bridge have announced a series of headline dates and festival appearances as part of a summer tour of Europe in support of their latest album, “The Last Hero.”

On the heels of a just-announced spring US trek, shows will begin in Germany with gigs at Bavaria’s Rock Im Park on June 3 and Nurburgring’s Ram Am Park on June 4.

Recorded in Orlando, FL with producer Michael 'Elvis' Baskette, Alter Bridge’s fifth record debuted at No. 8 on the US Billboard 200 upon its release last fall.

The set was launched with the first single, “Show Me A Leader.”

“With this record in particular, there was a lot going on,” singer Myles Kennedy revealed last fall. “It’s definitely a snapshot of a short window because the lyrics were put together as we were arranging the record during the first few months of 2016. And there was a lot going on, watching the news, paying attention to campaigns and race relations, and just the environment around us.

“This record was definitely influenced more so than anything by the current state of affairs. So this record kind of tells a story about that. We’re certainly not pushing any sort of agenda or political views by any means, but we’re definitely diving into and taking the pulse of the world around us.”

VIDEO: Eddie Van Halen supports music education in schools

Eddie Van Halen says music education should continue to be a priority in the age of budget cuts to schools.

"Music is such a necessity. It touches people's souls," the guitarist told CNN this week. "Music is the universal language to me. It transcends everything.

"My whole life has been music. I could not imagine anything else," he continued. "It's a must. It has to be taught."

Eddie and his brother Alex were trained as classical pianists from the age of six; Eddie later switched to drums and then guitar. The pair formed their first band, The Broken Combs, in fourth grade and would perform at lunchtime at Hamilton Elementary School in Pasadena, CA.

Van Halen appeared on CNN alongside Felice Mancini, CEO of the Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation, a program that provides musical instruments to students in low-income schools. The foundation doles out nearly 1,800 instruments annually to schools without music programs, which helps provide music education to over 10,000 students.

A few years back, Van Halen donated 75 guitars from his personal collection to the foundation to help with the cause.

"It was very difficult at first to find a charity that [takes guitars]," he explained. "They all just wanted money."

"It's the gift that keeps on giving," added Mancini. "The kids share the guitars, they learn, they graduate and then the instruments stay in the school. Our goal is to give kids every tool they can possibly have to succeed. Music is the common denominator. You put a kid in a music class and it builds community, communication and they find a place. It's a safe haven."

More information about Mr. Holland's Opus Foundation can be found at mhopus.org.

Eddie and Van Halen have been on an extended break following the end of a 2015 North American tour in support of “Tokyo Dome Live In Concert.”

REPORT: AC/DC planning new album with Axl Rose

An unconfirmed report out of Australia suggests that AC/DC are planning to work on a new studio album with Axl Rose.

AC/DC guitarist Angus Young joined Guns N’ Roses recently for two performances in Sydney and a guest appearance in Melbourne, with Noise 11’s review of the latest show reporting, “Axl Rose fronting AC/DC was controversial and if you didn’t like that combination you will be horrified to learn there is an album on the way.”

“The chemistry between Axl Rose and Angus Young has inspired Angus to start planning another AC/DC record,” reports Paul Cashmere, “but Guns N’ Roses touring commitments throughout 2017 will make it difficult to finalize the project.”

Rose made global headlines last year when he joined AC/DC for shows in Europe and the US after longtime vocalist Brian Johnson was sidelined from touring on the advice of doctors due to hearing loss issues.

Noise 11 hints that fans may be treated to some live Axl/DC ahead of a studio album.

“As all of the AC/DC shows were filmed,” adds Cashmere, “it is possible fans may be treated to a live album with Rose from the Rock Or Bust tour prior to the new studio album.”

Representatives for both AC/DC and Guns N’ Roses have not commented on the rumors or the Noise 11 report.

During an interview event in London, UK last June, Rose said he was planning new music with Guns N’ Roses and, possibly, AC/DC as well.

"We are working on new stuff,” explained Rose. “I've got a lot of stuff together, and I played some stuff for Slash and Duff and they liked it. And Angus and I are talking about working together. So we’ll see."

Angus is the lone remaining original member of AC/DC after a number of changes in recent years, including the 2014 retirement of founder Malcolm Young due to dementia, a series of legal issues faced by drummer Phil Rudd, the spring 2016 departure of Johnson, and bassist Cliff Williams’ retirement.

Three of the longtime members have seen their roles filled by others: guitarist and nephew Stevie Young stepped in for Malcolm; Chris Slade returned to handle drums after Rudd recorded “Rock Or Bust”; and, Rose was aboard for the 2016 dates in place of Johnson.

AC/DC recently swept the 2016 hennemusic Rock News Awards: the band were named the No. 1 Rock News Artist Of The Year</b> while delivering the No. 1 Rock News Story Of The Year and four of the Top 10.

AUDIO: The Doors preview expanded 50th anniversary edition of debut album

The Doors are streaming a 1967 live recording of “Twentieth Century Fox” as a preview to the March 31 release of an expanded, 50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of their self-titled debut album.

The tune is one of eight songs captured in concert at The Matrix in San Francisco, CA on March 6, 1967 from recently rediscovered original master tapes.

The live set joins remastered stereo and mono mixes of the original record in the 3CD/1LP 50th Anniversary reissue, which is packaged in a 12 x 12 hardcover book.

Considered one of the most influential albums in the progression of psychedelic rock, “The Doors” features instant classics like “Break On Through (To The Other Side)”, “Soul Kitchen”, “The End” and the No. 1 single, “Light My Fire.”

The record remains the band’s most successful studio release, selling more than 4 million copies in the States alone and over 17 million worldwide.

The surviving members of The Doors – guitarist Robbie Krieger and drummer John Densmore – recently marked the 50th anniversary of the debut’s release at a special event in Los Angeles, CA.

Joining Densmore and Krieger were family members of the late Ray Manzarek and Jim Morrison as the city honored the group by proclaiming January 4 as the “Day Of The Doors” with a proclamation from Los Angeles City Councilmember Mike Bonin during a public event at the intersection of Pacific and Windward Avenues, the location of the iconic “Venice” sign.

Roger Waters expands North American tour

Roger Waters has expanded his 2017 Us + Them North American tour with the addition of eleven new concert dates.

Nine cities – including Oakland, San Antonio, New Orleans, Milwaukee, Nashville, Cleveland and more – join the trek alongside additional nights in Los Angeles, CA and Denver, CO that bring the run to 51 shows across the continent, starting May 26 in Kansas City, MO.

The tour will present a mix of classic tunes and new music from Waters’ upcoming album, “Is This The Life We Really Want?”

The bassist has been working with Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich in London and Los Angeles on the project, which marks the follow-up to 1992’s “Amused To Death.”

"We are going to take a new show on the road, the content is very secret," explains Waters. "It'll be a mixture of stuff from my long career, stuff from my years with Pink Floyd, some new things.

"Probably 75% of it will be old material and 25% will be new, but it will be all connected by a general theme. It will be a cool show, I promise you. It'll be spectacular like all my shows have been.”

Tickets for most of the newly-added dates will go on sale February 27, with others going on sale in March – full details are available at rogerwaters.com

VIDEO: Metallica perform Creeping Death in China

photo: Jeff Yeager / Metallica

Metallica have issued official live footage of their 1984 classic, “Creeping Death”, from a January 18 show at LeSports Center in Beijing, China.

The video has been released in sync with a recap of the Beijing concert, which also saw Metallica perform their 1989 single, “One”, with Chinese concert pianist Lang Lang at the event.

The pairing delivered the debut concert appearance of the “...And Justice For All” track after teaming up in 2014 to play the tune at the 56th annual Grammy Awards.

“Loved the unique energy of performing with Lang Lang again!,” said the band after the Beijing show as part of the Asian leg of their WorldWired tour in support of their tenth album, “Hardwired…To Self Destruct.”

Metallica will return to the road for three concerts in Mexico City next month before a series of Lollapalooza appearances in South America in late March.

AUDIO: Soundgarden stream Flower remix from Ultramega OK reissue

Soundgarden are streaming a remixed version of “Flower” from the upcoming March 10 release of an expanded reissue of their 1988 debut album, “Ultramega OK."

The tune follows “Beyond The Wheel” as the latest preview of the project, which saw the band acquire the original multi-track tapes last year and connect with engineer Jack Endino to create a fresh mix of the album.

The Seattle rockers had always wanted to redo the original final mix following its original release, but their schedule became busy when they signed with A&M Records and began work on their major-label debut, "Louder Than Love."

The expanded reissue also includes the newly-created “Ultramega OK EP”, which presents newly-remixed, early versions of six songs that would make the album; these were originally recorded in 1987 by Endino and Chris Hanzsek at Seattle's Reciprocal Recording.

The “Ultramega OK” reissue will be available on CD, 2LP, download and cassette.

Soundgarden are currently working on the follow-up to 2012’s “King Animal” with plans to release a new album in 2017.

Anthrax film UK show for DVD release

photo: Leon Neal

Anthrax filmed their February 15 show at the Barrowland in Glasgow, Scotland for a DVD release later this year.

The event is part of the band’s first UK/European headline tour in more than a decade, which sees Anthrax performing their 1987 album, “Among The Living”, in its entirety as it marks its 30th anniversary.

"I don't know why it took us so long to come back to the UK and headline our own tour," says singer Joey Belladonna, "but I'm sure glad we did. These shows have been some of the best we've ever done, and that's really due to the interaction with the fans, they've just been crazy. And that's what we wanted to capture for this DVD."

Directed by Paul Green, the two-hour-plus Glasgow show was filmed with seventeen cameras, including five Go-Pros and a full-size camera crane.

The first five days on the UK tour saw a 150% increase in traffic on the band's website, and in less than a week, nearly 30,000 votes were cast by fans to help the band create the set lists for the UK and European shows.

Anthrax will begin the European leg of the run in Utrecht, Netherlands on February 19; they will follow then kick off a co-headlining North American tour with Killswitch Engage in Montclair, NJ on March 29.

VIDEO: Roger Waters previews new album

Roger Waters is streaming a video preview featuring a taste of music of his forthcoming album, “Is This The Life We Really Want?”

It’s the second advance look at the bassist’s first original record in 25 years, following some studio footage issued last month.

Waters has been working in London and Los Angeles with Radiohead producer Nigel Godrich on the project, which marks the follow-up to 1992’s “Amused To Death.”

While no official release date has yet been announced, the former Pink Floyd member says the album is “coming soon.”

Waters will debut material from the record on a North American tour that begins in Kansas City, MO on May 26.

"We are going to take a new show on the road, the content is very secret," he says. "It'll be a mixture of stuff from my long career, stuff from my years with Pink Floyd, some new things. Probably 75% of it will be old material and 25% will be new, but it will be all connected by a general theme. It will be a cool show, I promise you. It'll be spectacular like all my shows have been.”

VIDEO: Metallica sing Rihanna in latest Carpool Karaoke preview

Metallica can be seen singing Rihanna’s 2012 smash, “Diamonds”, in the latest preview to the upcoming launch of Apple Music’s Carpool Karaoke series.

The metal veterans were previously featured in the first trailer singing their 1986 classic, “Master Of Puppets”, on the road and 1991's “Enter Sandman” in a supermarket.

Based on the segment that has become a global viral video sensation on CBS-TV’s The Late Late Show with James Corden, the new Apple series features 16 celebrity pairings riding along in a car together as they sing tunes from their personal playlists and surprise fans who don’t expect to see big stars belting out tunes one lane over.

Where Corden initiated the series in the spring of 2015 as host and driver before selling the branding rights, the Apple version will occasionally feature the CBS star as well as other guests playing host through the 16-episode run, which will include appearances by Will Smith, Ariana Grande, Blake Shelton, Alicia Keys and more.

Apple’s Carpool Karaoke is expected to debut soon this spring.

Metallica will resume the WorldWired tour in support of their No. 1 album, “Hardwired…To Self Destruct”, with three shows in Mexico City next month before a series of Lollapalooza appearances in South America in late March.

Linkin Park announce new album and stream single Heavy

photo: James Minchin

Linkin Park are streaming a lyric video for “Heavy” as the lead single from their newly-announced forthcoming album, “One More Light.”

The band delivered the live debut of the track – with guest vocals by Kiiara alongside frontman Chester Bennington – from their rehearsal space on Thursday during a Facebook Live session, a social media platform where the band enjoys 62 million followers.

"We're super-excited about the song, and the excitement around it has been kind of crazy," Mike Shinoda tells Billboard. "We've put out a lot of first singles, and I've actually kind of been taken aback by the amount of excitement over the song and everything.

“I got introduced to Kiiara by [DJ} Zane Lowe. He interviewed her and asked her what her favorite music was, and she said Linkin Park right off the bat and he emailed me and said, ‘She's really interesting. I think she's so cool, and you guys should really meet.’ So we started talking and one thing led to another.

“Originally Chester had sung the whole song,” Shinoda adds, “but we felt like it needed this other perspective; if you hear another voice on it, it would make it feel like it's coming from more than one person. We asked her if she'd sing on it, and I thought it really took the song to another dimension."

Due May 19, “One More Light” marks Linkin Park’s seventh album and follow-up to 2014's "The Hunting Party", which debuted at No. 3 on the US Billboard 200.
