Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers have announced the first series of dates for a 40th anniversary tour.
The first run of shows marking the 1976 release of the band’s self-titled debut begins April 20 in Oklahoma City, OK with concerts scheduled into late July, and more dates to be announced soon.
Joe Walsh will open several of the early shows, with country star Chris Stapleton on board for a Wrigley Field event in Chicago, IL on June 29 and a pair of gigs at Milwaukee, WI’s annual Summerfest in July.
Petty revealed the news during a guest appearance on The Tonight Show via satellite on Thursday, telling host Jimmy Fallon, “I’m really excited, should be a lot of fun.”
Pre-sale tickets for members of the Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers Highway Companions Club begin December 14 at 10 AM local time, with the majority of dates on general public sale December 16 at 10 AM local time.
The tour news was delivered in sync with the release of two companion vinyl box sets featuring the group’s entire studio album catalogue alongside three solo records by Petty.
Issued on December 9, “The Complete Studio Albums Volume 1 (1976-1991)” presents Petty’s first nine records – from the 1976 debut to 1991’s “Into The Great Wide Open.” The set features the singer’s solo debut, 1989’s "Full Moon Fever."
The November 25 release of “The Complete Studio Albums Volume 2 (1994-2014)” delivered Petty’s solo efforts “Wildflowers” (1994) and “Highway Companion” (2006) alongside all band releases through to their most recent album, 2014’s “Hypnotic Eye.”
Many of these albums have been out of print on vinyl for years and most albums have been remastered on 180-gram vinyl for this limited-edition release.
With worldwide album sales of more than 80 million copies, Petty has charted albums in the Top 5 on the US Billboard Top 200 chart in each of his five decades as a recording artist.
Petty And The Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002 in their first year of eligibility.
The rocker will be honored as the 2017 MusiCares Person of the Year at an event in Los Angeles, CA on February 10.
