(L-R) Sculptor John McKenna, Bon Scott statue, AC/DC bassist Mark Evans |
A statue of AC/DC legend Bon Scott has become the top attraction in the late singer’s Scottish hometown of Kirriemuir just two weeks after it was unveiled.
The life-size bronze statue – funded by fans around the world – took sculptor John McKenna three years to complete.
The landmark was unveiled on April 30 as part of the town’s 10th annual BonFest event, which featured special guests Mark Evans, Tony Currenti and Bob Richards who all played with AC/DC, and Melbourne fashion designer Mary Renshaw, whose new book Live Wire charts her friendship with the singer who was her soulmate.
Now, The Courier reports the tribute has surged ahead of the Angus Glens and Peter Pan author JM Barrie’s birthplace on reviews website TripAdvisor to become the town’s most popular attraction.
Scott, who died in 1980 at the age of 33 after a night of heavy drinking in London, was born in Kirriemuir, Angus, but moved to Australia with his family when he was six.
The Scottish tribute marks the second landmark of Scott following the 2008 launch of a statue in his Australian home town of Fremantle.
Axl Rose performed his first show with AC/DC on the “Rock Or Bust” tour in Lisbon, Portugal on May 7 to rave reviews worldwide as he stepped in to assist the band following news that singer Brian Johnson’s hearing issues had reached a crisis point in March that caused the group the postpone 10 spring US dates.
The Lisbon concert included two new adds from the Scott-era 1978 album “Powerage”, including “Rock ‘n’ Roll Damnation” (played for first time since 2003) and “Riff Raff” (last performed in 1996).
