Metallica performed the live concert debut of their 1997 track, “The Unforgiven II”, at the Rock Im Revier festival in Gelsenkirchen, Germany on Friday.
The track – which originally appeared on their 7th album, “Reload” – was previously played during the band’s December 8, 1997 appearance on the Billboard Music Awards.
The tune is the sequel to “The Unforgiven” from 1991’s self-titled album, and was followed by “The Unforgiven III” on 2008’s “Death Magnetic.”
The German appearance is Metallica’s opening date of a 4-show run of European festivals before the group returns to headline the 2015 X Games in Austin, Texas.
The band have added a performance of the national anthem to their duties when they appear at the annual extreme sports event.
“Not only are we playing a show at the X Games,” says the band, “but James and Kirk will also be performing ‘The Star-Spangled Banner’ prior to the Moto X Speed & Style competition on Saturday, June 6.”
