Bruce Springsteen unplugged for his performance at the 8th annual Stand Up For Heroes charity event at New York's Theater at Madison Square Garden on Wednesday.
Organized by the Bob Woodruff Foundation, the evening at the Theater at Madison Square Garden raises funds for injured service members, veterans and their families.
For his traditional headlining set, Springsteen played five tunes, including “Working On The Highway”, “Growin’ Up”, “If I Should Fall Behind”, “Born In The USA” and “Dancing In The Dark.”
The 2014 event raised more than $6 million to assist military families, including a substantial sum brought in by Springsteen himself.
Rolling Stone reports Springsteen began playing a bluesy riff on an electric guitar and promised the instrument to the highest bidder. When bidding crapped out at $60,000, he threw in a one-hour private guitar lesson, which raised things to $250,000; the singer then threw in a lasagna dinner at his house. When that failed to generate a higher bid, he added on a ride around the block in the sidecar of his motorcycle and the shirt off his back – which was enough to get two competing bidders to make an agreement where they'd each pay $300,000 and share the prize.
In addition to Springsteen, Stand Up For Heroes also featured performances by Tony Bennett and comedians Jon Stewart, Jim Gaffigan, John Oliver and Louis C.K., among others.
On November 17, Springsteen will release “The Album Collection Vol. 1 1973-1984”, a box set featuring remastered versions of his first seven albums.
Available on CD and vinyl, the set will include “Greetings From Asbury Park, NJ” (1973), “The Wild, The Innocent And The E Street Shuffle” (1973), “Born To Run” (1975), “Darkness On The Edge Of Town” (1978), ”The River” (1980), “Nebraska” (1982) and “Born In The U.S.A” (1984).
Five of the albums are making their first appearance on CD and all seven are making their remastered debut on vinyl.
