On his 64th birthday Tuesday, Peter Frampton announced the upcoming release of a new album and dates for a US summer tour.
Due June 24 and inspired by Cincinnati Ballet, “Hummingbird In A Box” features a new studio version of seven virtuosic guitar pieces composed by Frampton with Gordon Kennedy, who also co-produced the 28-minute recording.
Frampton and Kennedy debuted the music live with Cincinnati Ballet last April at the Aronoff Center. That production also included two segments that were choreographed to existing Frampton music, which the British rocker performed with his band.
“Writing for dance was a wonderfully freeing experience," said Frampton. “There were no boundaries. We were able to push the composing envelope.”
Next month, Frampton and Kennedy will say a few words at Cincinnati Ballet’s performance when the company makes its debut at New York’s Joyce Theater on May 6. The program will include the New York premiere of “Hummingbird in a Box” performed to Frampton’s recording.
Kennedy called the experience of writing for ballet “beautiful, graceful, and instantly gratifying.” The duo previously teamed up for “Fingerprints”, which was recorded in the guitarist’s basement studio and went on to win a Grammy Award for Best Pop Instrumental Album.
Frampton will kick off an extensive summer tour on June 22 at the Horseshoe Casino Downtown in Cincinnati, co-headlining the trek with the Doobie Brothers; some dates will feature the return of ‘Frampton’s Guitar Circus,’ a format he debuted last year that will feature a revolving cast of fellow guitarists - Buddy Guy is already confirmed for the shows this summer.
