Seattle Police have disputed reports that they are re-opening the 1994 death case involving Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain.
Billboard reports Seattle Police tweeted the news, writing, “Despite an erroneous news report, we have not "reopened" the investigation into the suicide of Kurt Cobain.”
A second tweet followed, saying, “Our detective reviewed the case file anticipating questions surrounding the closed Cobain case as the 20 yr anniversary approaches.”
Police spokeswoman Renee Witt confirmed Thursday via the Seattle Times that no new findings were made, and that the case ruled a suicide in 1994 will remain shut.
The rumor stems from a report from the Seattle news outlet KIRO 7. The station reported Thursday morning that it had obtained a photo from previously undeveloped 35 mm film police found at the crime scene 20 years ago. The station will unveil the photo on Thursday nights 11 p.m. newscast and also interview a Seattle police detective.
Witt describes the photo as "underwhelming" and the police have assured the public they are not reopening the case, since no new findings have been made.
Cobain died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his Seattle home on April 5, 1994; his body was discovered three days later by an electrician who had arrived to do some work on the property.
On April 10, Nirvana will be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with KISS, Peter Gabriel, Hall and Oates, Cat Stevens and Linda Ronstadt.
