Queen’s 198l “Greatest Hits” collection has become the first album to sell more than 6 million copies in the UK.
The Official Charts Company reports sales of Britain’s best-selling album of all time means that a staggering one in four British households now own a copy of Queen’s original best-of set.
“Great news, AMAZING news from the Official Charts Company!“, said guitarist Brian May. “Queen’s Greatest Hits, which was released in 1981, has passed the 6 million mark in sales, which is incredible. I just want to say thanks to everyone who has supported us through the years, we hope to continue to serve you.”
"Wonderful. Who would have thought it!,” added drummer Roger Taylor. “And all due to the Great British public. Thank you. A great honour!"
Queen’s "Greatest Hits" leads the all-time UK sales list, some 900,000 copies ahead of ABBA's "Gold", with The Beatles “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” in third.
Queen’s 1991 follow-up, “Greatest Hits II”, currently sits at No. 10 on the list, with UK sales of 3.9 million copies to date.
