The Beatles were honored with a Lifetime Achivement Award Saturday at a pre-Grammy event in Los Angeles.
UT San Diego reports Ringo Starr was joined by George Harrison’s widow, Olivia, and John Lennon’s widow, Yoko Ono, at the ceremony; Paul McCartney was reportedly unable to attend due to rehearsals for Monday’s taping of a Beatles television special produced in co-operation with the Grammy Awards.
“It’s a Lifetime Achievement Award, but I feel like we’ve all got a lot more life left in us,” said Ringo. “It’s a great afternoon; it’s all about music… The Beatles’ music is still out there and that’s what I’m most proud of.”
“I’m here today because I think John would have wanted me to be here,” said Ono. “Now the Beatles music is waiting and ready to go to planets all over the universe. I'm very excited about that."
"Here's something you probably know: George was my favorite Beatle," joked Olivia Harrison. "But here's something you might not know. Aside from their music — as people — they are the most supportive and generous friends in my life. The Beatles are extraordinary people, and I'm thankful to be part of this extraordinary family."
The Beatles have been nominated for 25 Grammy Awards through the years; they have won 7 Grammys and have 15 recordings inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame, including “Abbey Road”, “A Hard Day's Night”, “The Beatles (White Album)”, “Meet The Beatles!”, “Revolver”, “Rubber Soul” and “Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band.”
Also honored at Saturday’s event were Armando Manzanero, Clifton Chenier, the Isley Brothers, Kraftwerk, Kris Kristofferson, and Maud Powell; Rick Hall, Jim Marshall and Ennio Morricone were Trustees Award winners; Emile Berliner and Lexicon received Technical Grammy Awards.
