Rock News Artist of The Year No. 6 – GUNS N’ ROSES
Guns N’ Roses started off 2013 with a preview of their upcoming concert film, “Appetite For Democracy 3D.”
The band offered up a performance of "Paradise City" from the footage, which was shot before a sold out crowd at the Hard Rock in Las Vegas during the group's 2012 Las Vegas residency (see video here).
Billed as GNRs’ first DVD release in over 20 years, the concert film was scheduled for worldwide release in cinemas, TV Broadcast and DVD later in the year.
Soon after GNR announced an Australian tour with ZZ Top, the band were challenged for their concert tardiness, with guitarist DJ Ashba offering up daily production delays as an excuse (here). GNR last toured the country in 2010, but were consistently late throughout: in Townsville (2 hours late), Sydney (1 hour late) and Adelaide (1.5 hours late).
In February, Axl’s $20 million dollar lawsuit against Activision Blizzard Inc. was dismissed; Rose had been alleging the company broke a promise not to use images of ex-bandmate Slash or songs by the guitarist’s new band in the “Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock” video game…which they went ahead and did, anyway (details here).
That same month, GNR played an acoustic set at the after-party for the launch of Tommy Hilfiger's new flagship store in Hollywood (video here).
In early March, VH1 Classic broadcast part of a June 2012 GNR performance at London, England's O2 Arena as part of a 5-hour special on the station. The concert was to have premiered in at select theaters in Europe the previous fall but was "postponed" by the band's management.
Axl dismissed any reunion talk during a rare interview to promote the Australian shows (here), and then managed to injure a fan during the tour’s opening night in Perth (here).
April saw a trailer released for the 3D film, with more promises that it would be out before the end of the year (here).
Former GNR drummer Steven Adler went back in rehab in May (here).
The band began a brief US tour in May, which wrapped with two Canadian club shows in July.
In June, former GNR bassist Duff McKagan was named the 2013 Distinguished Alumni Of The Year at Seattle Central Community College during its commencement ceremonies (here).
Guitarist DJ Ashba proposed to his actress/model girlfriend, Nathalia Henao, in August, complete with a private helicopter ride courtesy of Las Vegas police. The event led to an internal investigation by police that saw two of their officers demoted for illegally taking a citizen on a “fly-along” at the expense of taxpayers (details here).
Former GNR drummer Matt Sorum married his longtime girlfriend, Adriane ‘Ace’ Harper, in Palm Springs, California in October (here).
2014 begins with news from the production company that the band’s 3D concert film may actually see the light of day this year – in theaters, on television and a home release.
GNR recently announced a 10-date South American tour will start in March (dates here).
This past week, a music journalist revealed his real-life involvement with authorities over a “Chinese Democracy” leak in 2008 – a fascinating read (here).
