A rare first pressing of The Beatles “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” has sold at auction for $175,698.
The mono edition of the 1967 album was signed by all four members at a hotel in England.
RR Auction sold the piece, which is accompanied by a handwritten letter, dated 1985, from the original recipient of the signatures, an employee at the Atlantic Hotel, where the band stayed from September 12-15.
The package was also accompanied by a letter of authenticity from noted Beatles expert Frank Caiazzo, who states, “These signatures are excellent and complete examples, which date from within months of the album’s June 1, 1967, release date…Fully autographed ‘Sgt. Pepper’ LP covers are quite rare and considered by many collector’s to be the ‘Holy Grail’ of signed Rock and Roll albums.”
The Beatles will be honored with the Recording Academy's Lifetime Achievement Award at a special ceremony the night before the 56th Annual Grammys.
Paul McCartney is nominated for four 2014 Grammys, including Best Music Film and Best Surround Sound Album (Live Kisses), Best Boxed Or Special Limited Edition Package (Wings Over America), and Best Rock Song ("Cut Me Some Slack" with Nirvana).
The 56th Annual Grammy Awards will be held January 26, 2014 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles and broadcast live on CBS from 8–11:30 p.m. (ET/PT).
