The Beatles: TV special to mark 50th anniversary of Ed Sullivan debut

The 50th anniversary of The Beatles debut on the Ed Sullivan Show – February 9, 1964 – will be commemorated with a new TV special, “The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute To The Beatles."

The 2-hour show will feature today's top artists covering songs performed by the Fab Four that momentous evening in 1964 and Beatles songs through the years, and will include footage from that landmark Sunday evening, as well as other archival material.

The Beatles' first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show is one of the most watched television events ever — with 74 million people tuning in to watch the group perform five songs during the variety hour. It is considered by many historians and critics as one of the most important moments in music and television.

On their Sullivan debut, The Beatles performed “All My Loving”, “Till There Was You”, “She Loves You”, “I Saw Her Standing There” and “I Want To Hold Your Hand.”

"The Beatles are one of music's most iconic groups, who won their first two Grammys, including one for Best New Artist, in 1964 — the same year they took America by storm," said Neil Portnow, President/CEO of The Recording Academy. "It's only fitting that we recognize this milestone moment in music history and pay tribute to this larger than life group and their enduring music and legacy."

“The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute To The Beatles" will tape on January 27, 2014, and will be broadcast on CBS Sunday, February. 9, 2014, from 8–10 p.m. ET/PT — exactly 50 years to the day, date and time of the original event.

Tickets to the taping of the special will be available for sale to the general public, and additional ticket information will follow in the coming weeks.
