Green Day have announced a fall release of “Broadway Idiot”, a documentary that traces the transformation of the band’s 2004 album smash, “American Idiot”, into a Broadway production.
Directed by Doug Hamilton and produced by Ira Pittelman, “Broadway Idiot” will open with an exclusive theatrical engagement in New York starting October 11th, before it hits theaters and video on demand on October 18.
The documentary follows Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong as he works with Broadway producers, going behind the scenes to reveal the creative choices and challenges made by Armstrong and director Michael Mayer to create the thrilling and one-of-a-kind musical experience. More than just a show, but a personal and transformative experience for Billie Joe, the film provides insider access to Billie’s journey from rock star to Broadway star, dress rehearsals, performances and more.

Yes, it's loaded with great music from Green Day and full of the tradition of Broadway, but at its heart, it's a very personal story about having the guts to try something totally new," says director Doug Hamilton. "We are thrilled to be working with FilmBuff to bring the labor of love and dedication that is Broadway Idiot to everyone across the country in theaters and across all digital platforms. It's like bringing Billie Joe Armstrong and Broadway right to your doorstep."
“Broadway Idiot” had its world premiere at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival and was the first documentary feature to open the 2013 Newport Beach Film Festival.
