The Rolling Stones played a surprise secret gig at a club in the north of Paris on Thursday.
600 lucky fans packed into the tiny La Trabendo rock club to witness Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Ronnie Wood launch through a quick-fire barrage of hits, as well as one or two surprises.
Right from the start, The Stones went back to their Marquee Club roots and opened with “Route 66.” Mick bantered with the crowd in French whilst Keith Richards cranked out his bluesy licks on “It’s Only Rock and Roll.”
With long term keyboardist Chuck Leavell and bass player Darryl Jones also in tow, the Stones tore through a set which included “Miss You,” “Tumbling Dice,” “Start Me Up,” “Midnight Rambler” and “Jumping Jack Flash,” as well as live debut of new single, “Doom and Gloom.”
The crowd – who only paid 15 Euros ($20) for their tickets – went wild as the Stones came back on stage for an encore of “Jumping Jack Flash” and “Brown Sugar.”
The hour-long warm-up show is the first of what could be a few in advance of four concerts the band will perform in the next two months. The Stones will play London’s O2 Arena on November 25 and 29, and then the Prudential Center in Newark, NJ on December 13 and 15.
Ronnie Wood teased the secret gig subject earlier this week.
“There’s going to be little club gigs that we’re gonna surprise ourselves to do as well,” Wood told the NME. “We’ll bung a few in next week or the week after, so look out for any Cockroaches gigs or whatever! I don’t know who we’ll be billed as but we’ll turn up somewhere and put a few to the test. Tiny, 200, 300 people kind of places.”
On November 12, the Stones will release “GRRR!”, a new greatest hits collection to mark the band’s 50th anniversary. Learn more about “GRRR!” here.
