The event made headlines for the rockers because a fan launched an online petition to ask the Detroit Lions to replace Nickelback as the halftime entertainment, snagging 55,000 alleged signatures in the process.
Undeterred, the band arrived in Detroit to friendly faces, singer Chad Kroeger tells the CBC’s George Stroumboulopoulos. “Every single human being that we came in contact with in Detroit was like, ‘we love you. We have no idea what this is all about.’”
Kroeger then went on to explain that the band was told that there appeared to be an ulterior motive to the petition.
“There is an individual, who is a local artist,” Chad explains. “’Artist’ wanted to play the halftime show. So the guy who started the petition has something to do with [this Artist], and thought to himself, ‘how do I get my buddy to be able to play the halftime show. I will start a petition.’”
