“His playing was effortless,” writes Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine. “There's not one minute of his recorded career that feels like he's working hard at it – it feels like it's all flowing through him.”
Morello was just one of several high-profile artists participating in the 100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time poll, as the magazine assembled a panel of top players and other experts to rank their favorites and explain what separates the fret legends from everyone else.
Other big names involved include Metallica’s Kirk Hammett, Alex Lifeson of Rush, Eddie Van Halen, Brian May, Carlos Santana and Mick Mars of Motley Crue.
Each artist receives a tribute from another, as Morello writes about Hendrix, Van Halen writes about Clapton, Joe Perry on Jimmy Page, etc.
The Top 10 reads like a who’s who of guitarists, each of them legendary and influential in their own way.
The full list will be featured in a special issue with four special covers of Van Halen, Clapton, Hendrix and Page, and will be on newsstands and online at www.rollingstone.com on Friday.
