In a new interview with Dallas/Fort Worth radio station 97.1 The Eagle Rocks, the Megadeth leader spoke about his ambition to record with half of Metallica.
"I've talked to Lars [Ulrich] and James [Hetfield] about me and David [Ellefson, Megadeth bassist] doing a supergroup record with Lars and James,” explained Mustaine. “Well, James never said 'no,' but it's still kind of out there in the air. I'm gonna keep hammering on him. It's on my bucket list."
Mustaine was unceremoniously fired from Metallica prior to the recording of the band’s 1983 debut, “Kill “Em All,” replaced by Kirk Hammett. The band had driven to New York to record, and when it was decided that his alcohol and drug abuse, aggressive behavior and personality clashes with Heltfield and Ulrich were too much, Mustaine was driven to the bus terminal and put on a Greyhound back to Los Angeles.
Mustaine went on to form Megadeth, releasing their debut in ’85. His connection with the formation of Metallica has been both a benefit and a curse for Mustaine, as he spent many years trying to get out from under the big shadow cast by Metallica and their unstoppable success.
Mustaine appears to be on good terms with the Metallica boys these days, having toured as part of the Big 4 package over the past two years.
It remains to be seen, though, whether the friendship will turn into a business relationship with the recording dream Mustaine is currently trying to put into action.
