"I don't want to jinx it," Eddie Vedder tells Rolling Stone from a Los Angeles studio, as the band works on their 10th studio album. "But it's on!"
"We did a whole bunch of demos and everybody's got a disc of 25 [songs] right now," bassist Jeff Ament told Billboard back in March. "April will be the time where we get together and learn to play all these demos and figure out which 12-15 of them float to the top. Hopefully we can get something done this year."
"There's been so much focus on the past,” added Ament, “that I think all of us are really excited to make a new record and have something to look forward to because we've been digging in the boxes in our basement a lot the last year or so.”
With a series of reissues earlier this year, the upcoming PJ20 documentary by Cameron Crowe and a 20th Anniversary festival this fall, there’s been a lot of looking in the rearview mirror, and that’s not really what Pearl Jam is about.
“I feel like we have to keep our eyes on the road,” says Vedder. “Being nostalgic is like taking an offramp and getting a sandwich – and then you get back on the highway. I don't want to be spending the rest of my life at the gas station.”
Vedder hits the road this month for a solo US tour in support of his new release, “Ukelele Songs”; things kick off June 15 in Providence, Rhode Island.
