On Sunday afternoon, “Idol” executive producer Nigel Lythgoe spoke with xfinityTV.com at the “So You Think You Can Dance” auditions in Los Angeles and revealed some good news – news that Idol fans have hoped to hear all season.
When asked if we’d see Aerosmith and J-Lo perform on the finale, Lythgoe offered an even better, more surprising response. “It will probably be before that, actually,” he said.
Urged to spill any more details, he joked, “Actually, no, I told you that. It’s before then.”
Earlier last week, xfinityTV.com’s “Idol” columnist Roy Trakin addressed whether Aerosmith would perform this season, as it was the question everyone was asking, but extremely iffy since Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry weren’t on speaking terms.
Trakin reported “a harried label A&R exec recently traveling between different floors in the same Hollywood hotel to mediate between band principals Tyler and Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry,” and added, “the two have entered a détente, agreeing to start recording a new album sometime this summer, and carve out some touring time before Tyler starts season 2 of the show.”
Tyler then hit Twitter to let fans know that he and Joe had “smoked the peace pipe for an hour today. On our way to rockin' your fkin worlds this summer by locking ourselves away somewhere w/guitars and drums..."
This should be interesting, given Perry’s pre-season comments, last fall, that Idol was “a reality show designed to get people to watch that station and sell advertising. It’s one step above Ninja Turtles,” Perry told the Calgary Herald. “I’ll tell you one thing, when we put this band together, this is not something that (Steven) would do. It’s his business, but I don’t want Aerosmith’s name involved with it. We have nothing to do with it.”
