Preview: Bruce Springsteen “The Promise”

Bruce Springsteen is gearing things up for the November 16 release of two projects based around the recording sessions for his 1978 classic, “Darkness On The Edge Of Town” (see “First glance at Bruce Springsteen documentary” here).

"The Promise" features two discs of 21 previously unreleased songs from the sessions; Bruce recorded almost 70 songs and pared things down to 10 for the original release.

“The Promise: The Darkness On The Edge Of Town Story” is a 6-disc set that comprises over six hours of film and more than two hours of audio across 3 CDs and 3 DVDs. The media contents are packaged within an 80-page notebook containing facsimiles from Springsteen's original notebooks from the recording sessions, which include alternate lyrics, song ideas, recording details, and personal notes in addition to a new essay by Springsteen and never-before-seen photographs.

“The Promise: The Darkness On The Edge Of Town Story,” documentary premiered in September at the Toronto International Film Festival; the film documents the creation of the 1978 follow-up to “Born To Run,” which made Springsteen a household name. “Darkness” produced such Bruce standards as “Badlands,” “The Promised Land,” “Prove It All Night” and the title track.

In the first clip released from the set, you’ll see Bruce and Steven Van Zandt doing a unique version of “Sherry Darling”; a full band version showed up two years later on “The River.”
