Chickenfoot considering drummer options

As I mentioned last month, Chickenfoot are finding themselves at a crossroads these days, thanks to the individual band members’ busy schedules (see “Chickenfoot At A Crossroads” here).

With the band’s plans in place to head into the studio in January to record their sophomore release, the lineup of Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony, Joe Satriani and Chad Smith remains intact…for now.

Satriani has a new album, “Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards,” out this week and three months of touring to cover before the ‘Foot hit the studio.

Hagar is working on his autobiography, due out next year, and he and bassist Anthony will be in Cabo over the next week for Sammy’s annual birthday bash festivities.

Smith has returned to his ‘day job’ with the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who are currently in the studio recording a new album with producer Rick Rubin.

It’s Smith’s schedule that could throw things off for Chickenfoot next year.

“We just did two shows with Chad and they were fantastic,” Satriani told Music Radar. “Afterward, he said he's still committed to the band, so that was cool. We're due to meet at the end of January and complete the second Chickenfoot album. So everybody's attitude is, full speed ahead.”

If the Peppers hit the road next year, it’ll be crunch time for the ‘Foot, and Satriani is already talking about some options. “Were Chad not able to be in the band because of the Chili Peppers, I think it would be fun to get somebody really outrageous like Tommy Lee. He’s a great drummer, a lot of fun and a crazy personality. We’ve had some guys sit in from time to time. Some names that have been thrown around are Abe Laboriel Jr (from Paul McCartney’s band) and Jason Bonham. They’d both be really great.”
